The newspaper quoted sources as saying Charles E. Smrt, National Col legiate Athletic Association assistant enforcement officer, and another en forcement investigator arrived on campus early Mondayi The men have spent three days interviewing players about possible vio lations at Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas Christian and Texas, the newspa per said. The sources, who asked not to be identified, said the enforcement offi cers were expected to return to the campus for more interviews. Reports that other SWC schools are under investigation for recruiting violations follow an NCAA decision to put SMU on probation and levy some of the harshest penalties ever slapped on a school for rules violations in signing up football players. And in a press conference Wednesday at A&M, Coach Jackie Sherrill denied the accuracy of Dallas’ WFAA-TV’s report Tuesday alleging quar terback Kevin Murray had accepted cash payments and a leasing arrange ment on a sports car from an A&M booster. The alleged rules violation at A&M has also been referred to the NCAA for investigation. In the Times Herald story, one source is quoted as saying players inter viewed at SMU about violations elsewhere included receivers Ronald Mor ris, Marquis Pleasant and Albert Reese; running back Jeff Atkins; line backer Reggie Ballard; defensive backs Keith Brooks and Donald Allen; and quarterback Bobby Watters and offensive lineman Kevin McKinney. Morris and Ballard told the Times Herald on Wednesday they spoke with the NCAA investigators but would not elaborate. The source said coaches interviewed were Robert Henry, defensive line coach; quarterback coach Jeff Bower; and tight end-kicker coach Tony Marciano. Henry and Bower said they spoke to the NCAA but were not al lowed to comment on NCAA matters. SMU Coach Bobby Collins could not be reached by phone by The Asso ciated Press for comment. “I can’t comment on anything we’re doing other than emphasize that we are not investigating SMU,” said David Berst, director of enforcement for die NCAA. SMU officials had said this summer that they were conducting an inter nal investigation on possible recruiting violations by other SWC schools. A&M women natters host weekend SWC tournament SMU Mustangs By DOUG HALL Sports Writer The Texas A&M women’s tennis team opens its ’85 season today with hopes of improving last year’s third place Southwest Conference finish. TCU, Oklahoma and Southwest Texas State will battle against A&M and among themselves beginning at 1 p.m. at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. Finals from the 32 singles- matches will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday and the doubles champions will be determined at 1:30 p.m. “The team is real good this year,” said A&M first-year coach Bobby Kleinecke. “We are ready to go.” With five of last year’s top six play ers returning, and a host of prom ising new recruits, the Aggie’s chances of overtaking Texas and SMU in this year’s conference race look good, Kleinecke said. Among the returners: 1984’s No. 1 player Vanne Akagi and her dou bles partner and No. 2 player Gaye Lynn Gensler. “Our big goal is to get in the (AP and UPI) Top 20,” said Gensler, a junior from Houston. “Individually, everyone would like to win their di vision.” Those goals, Kleinecke said, will be, “difficult, but not out of reason.” In SWC tennis tourneys, each team enters its top six players. The number one player from each team competes against the other teams number one player and so on down the line.
