Announcer starts 18th year
as voice of Aggie athletics
Sh
By RODNEY RATHER
Reporter
Speaking clearly and soothingly.
Dr. Roger Feldman, a slight man
with a white mustache, is more than
another voice in the crowd.
Feldman, 59, and an associate
professor of veterinary pathology,
has been the public address an
nouncer at various Texas A&M ath
letic events since 1968. He believes
that objectivity is essential to his an-
nouncingjob.
“A public address announcer is
supposed to make statements that
will be useful and helpful to the
spectators of the game,” Feldman
says. “It’s no more than that.”
An announcer potentially has
great power over a crowd, especially
at indoor events such as basketball,
Feldman says, because people are
likely to listen to him. Wnat the an
nouncer says makes it truth in the
minds of the fans, regardless of
whether what he says is true or not.
“It’s kind of like radio announ
cing,” Feldman says. “A radio an
nouncer may say ‘Man, that was a
terrible call.’ Nobody saw it, but it
was a terrible call because that clown
says it was.
“It’s important to get out of the
game. Be an announcer. Don’t be a
spectator. If you’re going to be a
spectator, go buy a seat and sit in the
stands and you can yell as loud as
you want.”
Feldman’s practice of announcing
every game impartially is one of the
main reasons he was chosen to an
nounce at the Southwest Conference
Postseason Basketball Tournament
for the past six years.
Another facet of Feldman’s an
nouncing philosophy is that the only
important game is the one being
played where he’s announcing, he
says. This idea is supported by a pol
icy, which began last fall, of not re
porting football scores while a game
is in progress.
“Partial football scores aren’t
worth the papier they’re written on
or the words used to speak them,”
Feldman says. “When the game is
over. I’m going to read as many
scores as I can get while people are
going to their cars.”
Since Feldman began announcing
athletic events while in high school,
his philosophy of maintaining neu
trality while announcing has had
plenty of time to develop.
“I started the public address sys
tem at our high school in 1941,” he
says. “I have dabbled in voice work
ever since.
While Feldman has announced
many games in his career, he admits
to making a few mistakes.
One vocal blooper that stands out
in his mind involves a football play in

the referee ruled the ball
“I said that the quarterback was
ruled dead,” Feldman says. “Some of
my friends said, ‘It looked to me like
he survived.’”
But athletics is not all he an
nounces. He’s the master of ceremo
nies at about four horse shows a
year, among other community
events, and also has read names at
every A&M commencement for 16
years.
“I have read half or more of all
the names for people who have
?
raduated here since December of
969,” Feldman says.
While Feldman, a graduate from
Iowa State University, enjoys read
ing names at graduation, as a profes
sor he says he gets more gratification
from helping people.
“I’ve had the opportunity over the
years to help some youn
illeee with
through college with athletia. Fell
man says. “What you can do
f is
yourself is really not much. I’mc
one p>erson, so I can’t achieve vei
much, but every time I helpsonj
body. I’ve expanded what role i
what influence I may have had."
