Using his own age and inevitable retirement to identify himself with his elderly audience, the 74-year- old, second-term president pressed his campaign against “useless tax dodges†and called charges his tax plan would hurt the middle class “balderdash.†Addressing about 2,600 senior cit izens brought together by a national lobby financed largely by corpora tions that support the administra tion’s tax bill, Reagan said he op poses the present system because it isn’t fair. “I’ve been preaching the merits of free enterprise for years,†said Rea gan, whose 1981 tax cut was attacked lor providing the nation’s wealthiest taxpayers with the greatest benefits. “Business people provide jobs and create wealth. The forum was organized by Americans for Tax Reform, a coali tion of business and community groups set up to lobby for the tax bill. It is financed largely by its cor porate sponsors, including Dart and Kraft. After campaigning almost exclu sively for his lax proposal for much of the summer, Reagan’s biggest obstacle is in keeping it high enough on the congressional agenda to win action by both the House and Senate Ixefdre tfie end of the year. Survey says teachers feel views are ignored Associated Press NEW YORK — A majority of tea chers feel their views aren’t being sought in shaping education reforms sweeping the country, and more than one in four say they are likely to quit the classroom within Five years, according to a poll released Thurs day. “Clearly, many teachers feel left out of the wave of reform,†said Louis Harris, who conducted the second annual “Metropolitan Life Survey of The American Teacher.†Teachers are as opposed as ever to merit pay, according to the latest survey. And most also are leery of al lowing school districts to hire non- certified persons as teachers — a growing practice in New York City, Los Angeles. New Jersey and else where. Low salaries and poor working conditions were cited by nearly two- thirds of the 27 percent of teachers who said that they were “very likely†or “somewhcit likely†to leave the profession in f ive years. More than half of all teachers sur veyed said they had seriously consid ered leaving the profession for some other occupation. But those who have stayed on said they did so mainly because of their love of tea ching. “Teachers are telling the Ameri can public that education is headed for deep trouble unless teaching is treated as a true profession,†said Mary Hatwood Futrell, president of the National Education Association. Futrell and Albert Shanker, head of the rival teacher union, the Amer ican Federation of Teachers, were at a news conference at which the find ings were released. Most significantly, said Harris ata news conference, nearly two-thirds — 63 percent — felt their views were not sought in shaping educational reform.
