After considerable debate, the
ludent Senate voted Wednesday
night to put an emergency bill on the
Igenda concerning elections for
eshman class officers and senators.
Normally, the opening and clos-
[ig dates for filing, the filing sites,
he dates and sites of the elections,
runoffs and candidates’ meetings
are announced no less than 10 class
lays prior to the opening date for
iling.
However, because classes for the
all semester began a week later than
ast year, the bill provides that the
nnouncements be made no less
ban five class days prior to the
[ opening date for filing.
J Chris Gavras, election co-commis-
ioner, said the reason for moving
ip the elections is to get the fresh-
nan senators involved sooner.
The bill also increases the candi-
ates’ filing fee from $3 to $5 “for
romotional purposes of the elec-
ion commission,” Gavras said.
The elections for freshman presi-
lent, vice president, secretary, trea-
urer, social secretary and eight
reshman senators will be Oct. 7
rom9a.m. to 6 p.m. in two polling
laces, one on the north and one on
he south side of campus, with the
jecific locations to be named by the
lection commission.
If necessary, run-off elections for
reshman class officers will be Oct.
from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The eight
enate candidates with the most
otes will win the election.
In other business, Student Body
’resident Sean Royall addressed the
nembers on the student body’s ex-
lectations of the Senate.
“I think that your effectiveness is
lardy dependent on the expecta-
ionsofotners,” he said.
“I think that merely knowing your
esponsibility is not enough. You
mist meet them too,” Royall added.
He challenged the senators to
neet their responsibilies to avoid
ome of the problems that occurred
