Freedom fighters seeking support Associated Press DALLAS —— Rebels, guerrillas and freedom fighters from around the world have gathered in Dallas this week to try and raise money and moral support for their unswerving hatred ot communism. “We’ve come to show the world what they (Soviets) mean when they talk about peace,” Afghan rebel Ab dul Martin said through an inter preter. Martin, 20, is among a half dozen or so “fighters” attending the World Anti-Communist League meeting that began Tuesday at the Dallas Registry Hotel. The league and its American arm, the U.S. Council of World Freedom, hold the annual conference to pro mote awareness of what they call the “world communist menace” and raise money for fighters, explained retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, chairman of both organi zations. “We want to develop an awareness of the fact that there are countries whose people have been so abused that they’ve decided better dead than red,” Singlaub said. “Our primary philosophy is that we’re pro-freedom,” he said. “Our greatest concern is the human mis ery caused in those countries taken over by communism.” During the conference, members will participate in workshops and seek ways to aid resistance movements, Singlaub said Tuesday. “For example, if a big problem is a lack of understanding in Europe of Nicaragua, the solution might oe to sponsor a visit to Europe” of Nicara guan resistance leaders. “If the Afghans say their most se rious problem is lack of medicine," he said, “the solution might be to ship medicines and even doctors to them.” Several groups have threatened to protest the meeting, including the Dallas chapter of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Sal vador and the World Affairs Coun cil.
