Rose ties hit mark
as Reds ‘Ty’ Cubs
Associated Press
CHICAGO— Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb’s career record for hits Sunday, sing
ling for his 4,191st hit in a game he wasn’t even supposed to play and mov
ing to the threshold of uncharted baseball territory.
T he tying hit, his second of the game, came in the fifth inning against
Chicago Cubs right-hander Reggie Patterson and was greeted by a huge
standing ovation from the Wrigley Field crowd of 28,269.
“I was very happy all day with the way the people here received me,”
Rose said. “It was a very nice reception they gave me here.” •
Patterson, a minor leaguer until last Tuesday, said both hits came off
screwballs.
The record-tying hit was a line drive into right-center field, the 94th hit
of his 23rd season in the major leagues. Cobb set his record in 24 seasons,
ending in 1928, when he had 114 hits.
“It’s all part of the game. It’s just another hit to me. ...” said Patterson,
who was 8-10 with a 4.7 / earned run average with the Cubs’ Iowa farm club
of the American Association. “He’s the greatest ball player that ever played
the game. It was a history-making event and everybody wanted to see him
do his share.”
Rose had two more at-bats after tying the mark but could not get an
other hit. He grounded to short in the seventh inning and, after a two-hour,
three-minute rain delay, struck out with two men on in the top of the ninth
and the score tied 5-5.
The game was called because of darkness after nine innings, the score
still tied. At first it was announced as a suspended game, but the National
League later said it would go into the books as a tie, with all the hits count
ing. If the Reds need the game in their pennant chase, a new, additional
game will be played.
So, it’s back to his hometown of Cincinnati for Rose in his record quest.
The Reds open an eight-game homestand Monday night against San Diego.

EAST KYLE OR READ BUILDING?
No, the Intramural-Recreational
Sports Office has not moved to a new
building, we’ve just had a name
change! Last year a decision was
made to name East Kyle after
Thomas and Joan Read. Official ded
ication ceremonies will be held Oct.
12. So from now on we are not East
Kyle but the Read Building — not to
be confused with Reed McDonald!
