White Sox whip Texas
as Seaver breaks skid
Associated Press
ARLINGTON — His method was
not pretty, but Tom Seaver of the
Chicago White Sox got one stop
closer to a career milestone Sunday,
courtesy of the Texas Rangers.
Seaver pitched the While Sox to a
7-6 victory for his first career win
against the Rangers, leaving only
three of 26 major league teams he
has not beat.
‘‘I sort of ran out of gas a little in
the seventh," said Seaver. "I made
some good pitches tonight. I made
some bad pitches. I made a had pitch
in the first (a home run to Pete
O’Brien). I made a good pitch to
(George) Wright on a double play.
I’m not terrific but 1 pitched well
enough to win.”
Terrific or not, Seaver, 13-10,
picked up his 301st career victory in
6 1/3 innings and his first win in
more than a month.
Seaver had not won since Aug. 4
when he beat New V'ork for his
300th career victory. Since that time,
Seaver had made five starts with two
losses and three no-decisions.
He gave up three runs and eight
hits while walking two and striking
out three against the Rangers.
Bob James, w ho was last in a line
of six White Sox pitchers, picked up
his 24th save. He gave pinch-hitter
Bobby Jones’ three-run homer on
his first pitch, but got the final two
outs for the save.
“He (Jones) was looking for a fast-
all
leagues. He waited and jumped
over it. That’s what happens here.
You make a mistake and you’re
going to pay for it. I had a four-run
lead and 1 went right at them. Inter
esting way to get a save.”
Rangers starter Charlie Hough,
14-14, took the loss.
‘‘Hough threw the ball well,” said
Ranger manager Bobby Valentine.
“He got tired sitting in tne dugout in
the seventh. He went out there (in
the eighth) and didn’t throw a good
knucklebail. He threw a nothing
fastball that (Daryl) Boston hit. By
the time I got to the mound, he was
gone.”
Rudy Law led off the Chicago first
with a double, took third on a single
by Boston and scored on an error ny
shortstop Wayne Tolleson. Creg
Walker’s groundout made it 2-0 and
Fisk singled home the third run.
Then, with Luis Salazar on first
after a forceout. Fisk stole home as
part of a double steal with Salazar.
Fisk, who earlier this season be
came the fifth catcher in major-
league history to steal 100 bases,
stole home during the first and sec
ond in the eighth, setting up a two-
run single by Jerry Hairston.
. O’Brien hit a two-run homer, his
16th, in the bottom of the first be
fore Salazar led off the Chicago sev
enth with his eighth homer.
White Sox reliever Dan Spillner
walked I-iirry Parrish with the bases
loaded in the seventh, making it 5-3.
