A specific number of full scholarships are awarded to these sports. All others are equivalency sports, which means scholarships can be di vided by as many as four ways be tween these players. John David Crow, associate ath letic director of stadium revenue funds, says that, among other rules, football players must pass 24 hours per year to be eligible to play. Stu dents who don’t meet this require ment and fail to pass 24 hours the next year lose their scholarship, he says. As long as the player meets the re quirements, the one-year schol arship will continue to be renewed. The NCAA also prohibits football players from getting jobs to earn ex tra money and from receiving any others scholarships. Lynn Brown, student financial aid administrator of scholarships, says the stipends of academic schol arships total $7 million. Out-of-state tuition is waived for academic awards, but the tuition in crease has affected the stipends. Brown says University schol arships can not exceed $5,850, the cost of education at A&M as com puted by the scholarship office. This figure allows for tuition, room and board, required fees, transportation and personal expenses. However, students may receive more money from outside donors, Brown says. For example, she says one student receives $10,000 per year in scholarship money. But this is uncommon, Brown While University scholarship sti pends are spread among as many students as possible, students still need more money. Three permanent endowments are the President’s Endowed Scholar Awards, Lechner Fellowships and McFadden Scholarships. The stipends from these endow ments range from $750 to $2,500 Some scholarships have several restrictions, looking for students “that can’t be over 30 years of age, has to be male, must be from Podunk County, last name must be Park, must be of good moral character , . . .” — Taft Benson, director of stu dent finacial aid. finacial aid, says that some length restrictions cause problems becaust it tbkes time to find the student wiili the right qualifications. He says he has seen some sdtol arships with two pages of restnc tions, looking for a student “tliai can’t be over 30 years of age, has it be male, must be from Podunl County, last name must be Pari, must t>e of good moral character, must not drink alcohol, must fct clean-cut and close shaven, must It in the Corps of Cadets, and soon." Benson says it is difficult to fill someone that meets all the criteria, Most of the criteria is never so re strictive that a scholarship can'll* awarded, he says, but, if this dil happen, necessary changes can 1* made legally. Brown says two unusual critert she has seen were for a cadet studv ing sociology and for a student wit! a grade-point ratio below 3.0. Scholarships often serve a dm purpose. Some help the Universit meet minority enrollment requirt ments. per year. Brown says these awards are given to incoming freshmen with out standing high school records and a score of at least 1250 on the Scholas tic Aptitude Test. Academic Excellence Awards are given to undergraduate students who show excellent scholastic pro gress. All scholarship recipients are gau- ranteed dormitory space, Brown says. Though most donors establish certain scholarship requirements, no scholarship can be accepted if it is discriminatory, she says. Taft Benson, director of student Loyd Taylor, director of sdiod relations, issues the President Achievement Award, which pm vides four-year scholarships foi black and hispanic students. “The office of civil rights said had to have a certain percentaged hispanic and black stunents enrollet in the University, and, of course,on goal is to satisfy that requirement Taylor says. Taylor says the awards are ik based on financial need. The appl cant’s academic record, SAT scot and school involvement record at examined. We’ll See You There!
