Health officials are battling a
vKooping cough outbreak in South
Texas calied the worst in the area in
|atleast 10 years.

the Texas Department of Health.

in the bud but we’re not positive.”

A 1-month-old Del Rio baby who
died last week at a San Antonio hos
pital was diagnosed as having pneu
monia. But Griffith said doctors sus
pected she may have had whooping
cough.
Lab tests for the disease, charac
terized by a heavy, whooping-type
cough, are not 100 percent conclu
sive, doctors said.
In Val Verde County, pertussis
cases have been concentrated at
Laughlin Air Force Base. Because of
the incidence of the disease at the
base, the Centers for Disease Con
trol in Atlanta has sent an epidemio
logist to study the situation.

I;the 78-hour Labor Day period, the
Texas Department of Public Safety
Hoted that 41 people were killed in
Bollisions last Labor Day, with five
Hiore dying later as a result of inju-
pies suffered in holiday crashes.
H But Col. Jim Adams, DPS direc-
j tor, said he hopes the new seat belt
j law will be followed and that the
pleath toll will be lower.
I “We’re hoping Texans will start
getting in the habit of using safety
belts,” Adams said. “If the vast ma
jority of motorists make a conscious
effort to buckle up during this Labor
Day holiday period, we will see a
dramatic decrease in the number of
deaths.”
The seat belt law, passed by the
Legislature this spring, goes into ef
fect Sunday. However, the law in
cludes a 90-day grace period before
fines can be levied against violators.
Adams said the DPS also will con
duct “Operation Motorcide” over
Labor Day weekend, providing the
news media with periodic updates
on the highway death toll.
Adams said that of last year’s 46
victims, 28 died in accidents in which
excessive speed or alcohol were fac
tors.

Buzzards not
as useless as
some think

The turkey buzzard has acquired
an unfair reputation as an evil, foul
exploiter of death, while actually the
bird is nature’s airborne sanitary en
gineer.
Misconceptions about the buzzard
or turkey vulture are deeply rooted
in myth, tall tales and wrong infor
mation, according to an article in the
September issue of Sports Afield
that calls the bird useful, viable and
majestic.
The vulture inhabits much of the
earth, in our own hemisphere rang
ing from Hudson’s Bay to Tierra del
Fuego. He feeds almost entirely on
carrion.
Unlike his gigantic cousin, the
condor, vultures have adapted read
ily and successfully to the prolifera
tion of man.
The condor, because of his size,
needs large amounts of carrion to
survive.
The vulture requires much less
and in a nation of fast motorists and
consequent roadside kills, there is
never a scarcity of easy meals.
Turkey vultures mate in early
spring.
The eggs are laid in March and
both parents are diligent nesters.
Male and female share the brooding.
When the chicks are hatched the
parents continue to share domestic
chores, displaying gentleness and af
fection — and fierce protectiveness
— toward their offspring.
A chick will play dead if molested,
but an immature bird spreads its
wings threateningly and croaks its
displeasure. An adult bird reaches a
height of 3 feet with a wingspan
nearly double that.
Adult turkey vultures have few
enemies. Their primary adversary is
man.
Shotguns, electrical wires and ro
dent-control poisons kill countless
vultures every year. Pesticides can
render their eggs infertile or too
fragile to survive.
Vulture populations, however,
are in little danger because the bird
is a prolific survivor.
The vulture is clumsy on the
ground, but most graceful in the air.
