Victories in the men’s gymnastics individual finals Tuesday left the So viet Union with 12 golds and 26 medals in all. The United States had eight golds — all in swimming — and a total of 20 medals. South Korea had three golds, all in judo, and China and the Netherlands each had two. Bilozerche won the parallel bars, the rings, the floor exercise and the side horse — sharing the last two — on Tuesday, adding to the men’s all- around and the team gold. Bilozerche shared the horse title with fellow Soviet Valentin Mogiiny and the floor gold with Huang Wofu of China. Biondi, of Moraga, Calif., led the three Americans winning swimming golds Tuesday. He won his specialty, the 100-meter freestyle, in 49.14 sec onds, behind his world record of 48.95 hut better than the University Games record of 50.51. Silver medalist Stephan Caron of France also bettered that time. Biondi goes for a fourth gold Wednesday as part of the U.S. men’s 400- meter freestyle relay. The swimmers broke three Univer sity Carnes records Tuesday. Besides Biondi, the American women’s 400-meter freestyle relay team and back- stroker Igor Polyanski of the Soviet Union set standards for the University Games. The U.S. women won in 3:49.10, shaving a half-second from the old mark of 3:49.64 and the Soviets were second in 3:51.17. Polyanski won the 200 back in 1:59.76, breaking the games record of 2:00.42 but falling more than a second short of his world mark. Sean Mur phy of Canada was second in 2:02.69. Patty Sabo of Dearborn, Mich., was the other American winner Tues day, taking the 400-meter freestyle in 4:16.23, ahead of Hungarian Andrea Orosz. Royals 7 young pitching staff rotates toward AL pennant Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kan sas City Royals head into the pen nant drive days of September boast ing one of the top starting pitching rotations in baseball — and that doesn’t surprise Manager Dick How- ser. “They were good last year,” How- ser said of his solid five-man starting rotation. “Their numbers won-and- lost-wise weren’t as good as they should have been, hut we didn’t score a lot of runs. But, they still pitched good and got everybody’s at tention.” The attention has grown this year with each new turn on the mound. Going into Tuesday’s game with Milwaukee, the Royals’ starting five of righthanders Bret Saberhagen and Mark Gubicza and lefthanders Bud Black, Danny Jackson and Charlie Leibrandt led a pitching staff that ranked second in the American League in earned run av erage at 3.51 and has allowed a league-least 77 home t uns. The starters have a combined ERA of 3.32 over 820 innings. Lei brandt is second in the league with a 2.79 ERA, Saberhagen third at 2.81 and Jackson seventh at 3.05. Saberhagen at 16-5 is tied for the league-lead with 16 victories, while Leibrandt is 13-6 and Jackson 12-7. Gubicza is 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA and Black is 8-13 with a 4.1 7 ERA. Jackson is among the league-lead ers in shutouts with three, while Lei brandt has twice kept opponents scoreless. The Royals starters have hurled only one less shutout than league-leader Detroit, whose staff has 10 to their credit, and already have equaled last year’s season total. The best news for the Royals — however disheartening to the rest of the league — is the youthfulness of the staf f . Leibrandt and Black are the old est at 28, while Jackson and Gubicza are 23 and Saberhagen is 21. “It’s kind of an amazing thing be ing so young and being in the situa tion I’m in,” said Saberhagen.
