TOKYO — A woman who sur
vived the Japan Air Lines crash in
which 520 people perished, said her
8-year-old daughter shouted at her,
urging her to stay awake and live
through the long night in the wreck-
age.
Hiroko Yoshizaki, 35, said that al
ter the crash she was on the edge of
consciousness because of pain when
her daughter, Mikiko, shouted:
“Don’t go to sleep mother! Stay
awake or you'll die! I’m hungry
mother!”
Yoshizaki gave the account from a
hospital bed to her mother, Matsue
Hara, who provided it to The Asso
ciated Press on 1 uesday in a tele
phone interview.
Yoshizaki and Mikiko were
among the four survivors of the
Aug. 12 crash that was the worst sin
gle-plane disaster in aviation history.
Yoshizaki's husband and their other
two children died in the crash.
The government had not pin
pointed the cause of the crash, and
workers were still on the mountain
70 miles northwest of Tokyo recov
ering bodies and debris.

survivors, off-duty stewardess Yumi

In earlier attacks Tuesday, gun
men believed to be Sikh militants at
tacked the home of Gurdial Saini,
the Congress Party president, killing
Dev Dull Khullar, a 62-year-old
Congress Party member and Hindu
village leader.
Saini was seriously wounded in
the attack and was listed in stable
coondition in Jullundnr hospital.
Sikh party worker Curbachan Singh
was also wounded in the leg.
The Punjab accord was signed in
New Delhi July 24. The settlement
was hailed by Gandhi as a solution to
the long campaign by the Sikhs for
some autonomy in Punjab. But
many Sikhs rejected the accord.
They objected to it because Gan
dhi rejected an amnesty for nearly
5,000 Sikh army mutineers and the
release of thousands of imprisoned
youths.
Commenting on the violence, the
f >rime minister said: “Anti-national
orces are at work to f rustrate forces
of political reconciliation in Punjab.
We must fight these forces unit
edly.”
After the attack on the Congress
men, Jullundur was sealed off and
roadblocks were set up in the state’s
major industrial city, 192 miles
northwest of New Delhi and 48 miles
southeast of the Sikh holy city of
Amritsar.
“A man of peace has fallen to the
bullets of assassins,” Gandhi said in a
condolence message. “He has left a
void which is difficult to fill.”
The government had provided
around-the-clock bodyguards fo
Longowal after he signed the
accord. Officials had feared he
would be assassinated by those who
rejected the accord.
“If others don’t approve of it, let
them not.” Longowal said after the
signing. “The accord is in the favor
of the Panth (Sikh cause) and the
whole of Punjab,” he said.
