Running back Tony Dorsett, who re
turned to the Dallas Cowboys’ train
ing camp Thursday after a lengthy
holdout, said he is sorry the name
calling got out of hand and that he
couldn’t be happier with his new
contract.
“I never dreamed things would
get as ugly as they did,” said Dorsett,
who had called the Cowboys’ “dou-
ble-crossers” at one point during the
negotiations. “I’m happy to be back
and I never thought I’d say that
about training camp. It’s been an or
deal.”
Dorsett has agreed to a new five-
year contract that includes deferred
payments going into the next cen
tury, but he declined to go into spe
cifics.
“I’m not talking about my con
tract,” Dorsett said. “I’m here to play
football.”
He said he decided to come back
last weekend after watching the Dal
las-Green Bay exhibition game on
satellite-fed television.
“I just want to be a part of this
team and I’m extremely happy,”
Dorsett said. “Through all this, there
has been a lot of things said, some
that shouldn’t have been. Apologies
have been made and I owe an apol
ogy to the fans of America.”
The nine-year veteran added that
“I have no bad feelings” towards the
Dallas Cowboys, but ne blamed the
media for saying he asked to be
traded.
“I was just considering that as an
option,” Dorsett said. “I never de
manded to be traded.”

LOS ANGELES — Their names
are Welch, Valenzuela, Hershiser,
Reuss, Honeycutt, Niedenfuer, Diaz
and Howell. Those Los Angeles
Dodgers pitchers combined for 52
innings over six days without allow
ing an earned run.
The string, which ended in the
first inning of Thursday’s 5-4 victory
over Atlanta, surpassed the previous
club record of 48 set in 1966 when
Hall of Fame members Sandy Kou-
fax and Don Drysdale led the staff.
“This is the most complete staff
I’ve had since I’ve been here,” said
Tom Lasorda, who is in his ninth
year as the Dodgers’ manager.
“We’ve got five stoppers is what
we’ve got,” said catcher Mike Scios-
cia after Wednesday night’s game in
which Bob Welch ran his scoreless
streak to 16 innings and dropped his
earned run average to 1.67.
Welch, 9-1 for the season after el-—
bow troubles in the spring, has had
two complete games during the 52-
inning streak that began last Friday
night after he allowed a second in
ning home run to Cincinnati’s Nick
Esasky.
Also sharing the honors are:
• Fernando Valenzuela, 13-8
going into a Thursday afternoon
game against Atlanta, went all the
way for a victory over the Reds Sat
urday night, allowing only an un
earned run.
Landry expects Dorsett to pay fines
Associated Press
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.
Dallas Cowboys Coach Tom Landry
said on Thursday that holdout run
ning back Tony Dorsett would still
have to pay his $ 1,000 a day fines for
missing 20 days of training camp.
Dorsett came to a settlement with
the Cowboys Wednesday night,
agreeing on a new five-year contract.
“The fines are still intact and he
has to pay it,” Landry said. “You
can’t make an exception for a
player.”
Landry said, “I’m happy Tony is
back. It’s very good for him. It was
the point where he needed to get
back.”
Landry said Dorsett wouldn’t be
used in Saturday’s NFL preseason
game against San Diego, but would
play in an Aug. 26 game against Chi-
