Tutu says he’ll shoe
defy restrictions
against funerals

Associated Press
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa
— Bishop Desmond Tutu quieted
tensions at a funeral for black riot
victims Thursday, persuading police
to withdraw and angry mourners to
be calm.
But the Nobel Peace Prize winner
also pledged to defy funeral restric
tions proclaimed by the white gov
ernment. “I listen to God, not any
other authority,” he said. “I will con
tinue to speak at all meetings, re
sponsibly, as a minister.”
Witnesses said Tutu personally
imposed calm on an explosive situa
tion in Tumahole, a riot-torn black
township near Parys, 62 miles south
of Johannesburg. At his urging, po
lice withdrew from the path of the
funeral procession, and he told the
1,000 mourners: “For goodness
sake, let us stop doing things we’re
going to be ashamed of!”
Police said Tutu’s remarks and
the funeral did not violate the rules
because Tumahole is not in an emer
gency area. It was held in a commu
nity hall.
Under the new restrictions, de
creed under the state of emergency
put into force July 21 in 36 towns
and cities, only ordained ministers
may speak and they may not men
tion politics.
Tutu said later that he would
speak next Tuesday at the funeral of
riot victims in Daveyton, a township
near Johannesburg that is in an
emergency area.

Manufacturers of AIDS drug
say testing may begin in U.S.
Associated Press
PARIS — The producers of the
chemical used in actor Rock Hud
son’s AIDS treatment say controlled
clinical trials of the substance, HPA
23, may start soon in the United
States. But they warn against exces
sive optimism.
One American AIDS victim who
has undergone 10 weeks’ treatment
in Paris with HPA 23, Bob White,
says it appears to have stabilized his
case, though not those of some other
Americans receiving the treatment.
White, leading efforts to allow the
Americans to continue HPA 23
treatment back home, said his im
mune system remains “depleted” but
“I have no longer any active AIDS
virus, I have no current infection, I
swim 1,000 yards a day and live in a
fifth-floor walk-up.”
He said, however, his treatment
started within weeks of his AIDS di
agnosis in February and “it only
works on early-stage patients.”
Among about 10 other Americans
getting HPA 23, he said, “some are
not quite as healthy and have had in
fections.”
Film star Hudson was treated for
six weeks last year with HPA 23, his
Paris spokeswoman Yannou Collart
said Wednesday. But when he re
turned here July 20 his condition
was not considered suitable for fur
ther treatment. He was flown back to
Los Angeles on Monday.
Dr. Yves Ghampey, vice president
for medical and scientific devel
opment at ^the government-owned
chemical company Rhone-Poulenc
Same, which makes HPA 23, said
new trials will start in France “in the
coming weeks” on up to 150 pa
tients.
“In seven to eight months we will
have at least preliminary results and
some hard facts to work on” about
the effect of HPA 23 at various do
sages and its side effects, he told The
Associated Press on Wednesday.
Patients will be chosen for the
tests “as early as possible after diag
nosis,” he said. He stressed that HPA
23 is still only a chemical compound
and not a developed drug.
In the United States, the compa
ny’s American branch, Rhone-Pou
lenc Pharmaceuticals, is expected to
file for Food and Drug Administra
tion permission for clinical trials “in
three to four weeks, maximum,”
Ghampey said.
The FDA has said it could “turn
around” the application within two
weeks.
SPACE CENTER, Houston —
Challenger’s astronauts zapped a sa
tellite with an electron beam gun
Thursday to duplicate in miniature
the powerful energy fields of stars.
A 6‘/i-foot free-flying satellite
called the Plasma Diagnostics Pack
age was hit with a jolt from the gun
aboard the space shuttle. The astro
nauts said they could see flashes of
light as the beam followed natural
magnetic lines to the satellite.
Scientists on the ground called the
demonstration “a fabulous success.”
The experiment duplicated on a
small scale the bolts of electron en
ergy that astronomers have dec-
tected flashing in deep space be
tween large stars many light years
apart. It’s hoped that data gathered
by the PDP will help explain the phe
nomena.
NASA engineers evaluated the
amount of rocket propellant left on
board Challenger and studied the
possibility of raising the shuttle’s low
orbit. Scientists hoped the orbit
could be raised 8 to 10 miles to en
hance data being gathered by a de
vice studying the abundance of he
lium in the sun.
Challenger went into a lower-
than-expected orbit when a rocket
engine shut down during its launch
Monday. The spacecraft is circling
Earth at 195 miles, 46 miles lower
than planned.
This degrades some of the data
being gathered by science
ments ami even a small increast;

scientists said. A decision could)
