AIDS
Houston area blood banks
begin screening donations
Associated Press
HOUSTON — In an effort to
prevent the spread of Acquired Im
mune Deficiency Syndrome, area
blood banks are screening all do
nated blood for the presence of an
AIDS virus antibody, a blood center
official said.
Bill Teague, president of the Gulf
Coast Regional .Blood Center, said
the screening tests provide an extra
safety check to prevent the spread
ing of AIDS through blood transfu
sions. The blood center handles
170,000 units of blood a year.
The screening test, manufactured
by Litton, does not determine if a
person actualy has AIDS. Instead, it
tests for the presence of the antibody
to the HTLV-III virus, which is be
lieved to cause the disease.

groups
who have had more than one sexual
partner in the last five years, intrave
nous drug abusers and hemophiliacs
— are asked not to donate blood.
Richard Adams, chairman of the
Mayor’s Task Force on AIDS, said
gay leaders stand behind the blood
center’s call for sexually active gay
men to refrain from donating blood.
“However, we do not recommend
they take the antibody test for
HTLV-III, since it has no diagnostic
value and it is not an indicator of
current or future health status,” Ad
ams said. “Studies in New York and
San Francisco show that only 10 per
cent of those exposed to the- virus
come down with AIDS.”
As of March, 216 cases of AIDS
have been recorded in Houston and
108 have died. Four cases were at
tributed to blood transfusions per
formed by the city, Teague said.
Kitten killing prompts
woman to sue shelter
Associated Press
NEW BRAUNFELS, — A woman
is suing The New Braunfels Hu
mane Society for $10,000 in dam
ages under the Deceptive Trade
Practices Act, and for $5,000 in law
yer’s fees.
Hope Dean said she and her 2-
year-old son took six kittens to the
animal shelter on May 23, were
promised that good homes would be
found for them and left after paying
the required $15 shelter fee.
A few minutes later. Dean
changed her mind and returned to
the shelter, planning to keep one kit
ten. '
But the animals were dead.
“Those were six healthy kittens as
sassinated by those people,” said law
yer Norman Dean, who with his
wife, is suing the human society.
Cheryl Pillar, manager of the shel
ter, said the kittens were killed be
cause they were younger than eight
weeks old and, therefore, more
likely to get sick. She also said the
shelter was crowded at the time.
According to the suit, when the
kittens were dropped off at the shel
ter, an attendant assured Dean the
kittens would get shots and that “all
attempts would be made to find
them nomes.”
When Dean learned that the ani
mals were dead, she asked for and
received a refund of her $15 shelter
fee.
“We’re not out to make money,”
Dean said. “The organization is'
worthwhile and necessary. We just
want them to clean up their act.”
If the Deans win, they said they
will give the money to the national
Humane Society.
Pillar said that national officials of
the Humane Society have recom
mended that shelters kill kittens
younger than eight weeks because
they are more susceptible to disease.
“There’s no demand for adop
tion, and we can’t take chances with
sick animals,” Pillar said. “There’s a
sign here that says we can’t guar
antee a pet will be adopted.”
