5 Aggies chosen
to be on 1985-86
advisory board
By KAREN HELLER
Reporter
Five Texas A&M students have
been selected to serve on the Chan
cellor’s Student Advisory Board for
1985-86.
The members are Bonnelyn
Krumpotic, Madelon Yanta, Michael
O’Quinn, and Doug Robinette. Sean
Royall, as student body president, is
automatically on the board and
Mark Self has been chosen as an al
ternate.
Yanta and O’Quinn also served on
the board during 1984-85.
The committee members make
recommendations to Chancellor Ar
thur G. Hansen to give to the Texas
A&M Board of Regents. Represen
tatives from the other Texas A&M
University System schools also serve
on the board.
Yanta will be chairman of the
CSAB. Last year, the chairman of
the CSAB was a student at Tarleton
State University.
Dr. John Koldus, vice president
for student services, says the idea for
the board was generated three years
ago by students in the Legislative
Study Group. The students talked to
Hansen, Koldus says, and the chan
cellor agreed to give the board a try.
The CSAB is made up of five stu
dents from A&M, two students from
A&M-Galveston, and three students
each from Tarleton State and Prairie
View. Each school also has one alter
nate on the board.
The committee members meet on
the campus where the Texas A&M
Board of Regents is meeting and dis
cusses issues and problems concern
ing the TAMUS. The council meets
on the A&M campus every other
month.
The agenda for the advisory
council is based on issues the stu
dents want to discuss, because “you
never want to have something artifi
cial in terms of an agenda,” Koldus
says.
Michael O’Quinn, who served on
the CSAB last year, thinks that this
could be the best year yet for the
board.
Although last year was only the
second year for the board, O’Quinn
says the board worked on some pro
jects that affected the University sys
tem as a whole.
For example, the CSAB discussed
the concerns and needs of non-tradi-
tional students — older students
who have come back to school —
O’Quinn says.
The board also discussed the
“Texas Plan,” a desegregation plan
which may be implemented at Prai
rie View. The plan suggests that
scholarships he offered to white stu
dents living near Prairie View to de
segregate the school.
The CSAB charter requires that
goals be set for every year, O’Quinn
says. But, he says specific goals for
the upcoming year haven’t been es
tablished yet.
With Yanta as chairman, O’Quinn
says it looks like it will be a good year
for student input.
The CSAB has to be perceived as
a cross-section of the campus, O’Q
uinn says, not as a part of Student
Government or an MSC group. This
year, the CSAB will focus on better
communication between the stu
dents, the faculty and the research
ers on campus, he savs.
“We believe students should be in
a position to have a significant say-so
in student life,” O’Quinn says.
Council members are chosen by a
selection committee appointed by
Texas A&M President Frank Van
diver. The selection committee is
made up of two students and two
faculty members. Applications are
taken in April and interviews are
conducted later.
To apply for a council position,
Texas A&M students must have 27
credit hours at a college or univer
sity, have attended A&M at least one
semester and have a 2.25 overall
grade-point ratio.
