ued his torrid hitting with three sin
gles and a double. He is now 20-for-
41 in his last 10 games, for a .488 av
erage, and has 11 RBI during that
stretch.
Koosman struck out three and
walked only one in winning his first
game of the season against one loss.
Bill Gullickson, 3-2, took the loss.
The Phillies banged out 16 hits
against four Montreal pitchers, in
cluding Razor Shines, an outfielder
who pitched the eighth inning.
Shines, who had never pitched in the
majors but threw one inning in Class
AAA last season, gave up one Phila
delphia hit.

PITTSBURGH — Jason Thomp
son belted a two-run homer to cap a
three-run first inning and Steve
Kemp’s two-run double keyed Pitts-
burgn’s three-run sixth as the Pirates
defeated the San Diego Padres 6-2
Tuesday night.
With the Pirates leading 3-2,
George Hendrick and Tony Pena
singled off loser LaMarr Hoyt, 2-2,
before Kemp drilled his bases-clear-
ing double into the right-field cor
ner. Rafael Belliard followed with a
double, scoring pinch-runner Doug
Frobel.
The Pirates had jumped on Hoyt
in the first inning. Joe Orsulak ex
tended his hitting streak to 11 games
with a single before advancing on a
groundout and scoring on Bill Mad-
lock’s single. Thompson made it 3-0
with his homer.
DETROIT — Gary Gaetti drove
in four runs and Kent Hrbek and
Tim Teufel homered Tuesday night
to highlight a 10-run Minnesota"
fourth inning as the surging Twins
bombed the Detroit Tigers 11-2.
It was the Twins’ ninth straight
win. John Butcher, 3-1, who turned
in his fourth consecutive complete
S ame, held Detroit to five hits. The
ard-throwing right-hander walked
one and struck out one.
The Tigers were leading 2-0 be
fore the Twins blew them away with
their 10-run, nine-hit rally. It was
the most runs the Twins had scored
since a 10-run inning April 27, 1980.
The last time they rapped out nine
hits in an inning was Sept. 5, 1976.

keyed a five-run first inning with a
two-run double to lead the Rangers
to an 8-4 victory over the New York
Yankees Tuesday night, denying
Billy Martin for the second night in a
row his first victory in his fourth go-
round as Yankee manager.
Dickie Noles, 2-1, pitched five in
nings to pick up the victory. Phil
Niekro, 3-2, lost his first game since
April 8.
The Rangers jumped on Niekro
with four singles and two doubles in
the first inning. Tommy Dunbar
led off with a single to right, and
BALTIMORE — Gary Roenicke’s
two-run homer and a two-run single
by Rick Dempsey keyed a five-run
fourth inning Tuesday night that
g ropelled the Baltimore Orioles to a
-7 victory over the Chicago White
Sox.
The triumph was the sixth in
seven games for the Orioles, who
had to withstand a five-run Chicago
ninth. The White Sox had a three-
game winning streak snapped.
