Page lO/The Battalion/Thursday, April 18, 1985 A&M netters control own destin By MARYBETH ROHSNER Sports Writer Things are coming right down to the wire for the Texas A&M men’s tennis team. And, if coach David Kent’s netters can generate enough power, the Ags may pull of an electrifying finish to the spring season by defeating TCU on Friday and Texas Tech on Saturday. “We’ve got our destiny in our own hands,” Kent said. “We can still finish second in the conference.” The top spot in the Southwest Conference belongs to SMU. The No. 2-ranked Mustangs are now 54-9 overall and 7-0 in the SWC. But the competition will still be close for second, third and fourth places in the SWC. Kent said a high finish and an NCAA bid is still possi ble for A&M, 35-19 overall, 3-3 in the SWC. “We’ve been working hard,” he said. “If we can’t handle the pressure better than we have been lately, we don’t deserve (an NCAA bid).” l ech, 20-34 overall and 1-5 in the conference, is unranked. “I think we’ll beat Tech pretty handily,” Kent said. “TCU will be an even-steven match. They’re a very good team. We’vejust got to do better in doubles against them.” By ^ I From the Chapman is looks like granclfathei closely. 9 He wears fton bow t western b( stamped oi shoes with A is white as si Photo by LEE BOOlil PIIW, Lgg< struggling in doubles play, Kent’s combos worked well together against Rice last weekend. Connell, still undefeated in SWC singles play, will face TCU’s Tom Mercer. Mercer is also undefe ated in the conference. Even if A&M doesn’t pull NCAA bid, Kent has nothing t< plain about. an mi- “We’ve accomplished mon tennis season than ever before,’ ■ this Kent said.
