EL PASO — They are busy as
bees. Their days are buzzing with ac
tivity. They are the unsung heroes in
a game of hive-and-seek.
We could drone on, but to get to
the point, this is the story of the El
Paso Swarm Patrol.
This is swarm season in El Paso,
said Oliver Franklin, treasurer of the
El Paso Beekeepers Association. The
season began around April 1, and
since then, the volunteers of the
swarm patrol have captured 18
swarms of honeybees. Eleven of
those have been captured in the past
three days, Franklin said.
One of two swarms captured Fri
day in the backside of a car in a
downtown parking lot contained
about 4,500 Bees, Franklin said.
“There are about 1,500 bees to
the pound,” Franklin told the El
Paso Times. “That was a small
swarm. A big swarm is five to six
pounds.”
Last Saturday, he said he was
called to the Southern Pacific round
house just east of downtown and
captured a 9-pound swarm.
“They come out of the walls and
ceilings of those old buildings down
town,” Franklin, said. “We had a pre
tty wet January, February and
March, and wetness causes overpop
ulation of nests. When a nest is over
crowded, the bees swarm.”
The Swarm season lasts until
about the middle of May, he said. In
an average season, the swarm patrol
captures 100 to 125 swarms, some of
which contain tens of thousands of
bees.
Whenever overcrowding is appar
ent, Franklin said, the bees Sense it.
In the nest, a new queen egg is laid.
When it hatches, the old queen and a
large group of followers fly away,
leaving the new queen behind to rule
over the rest of the nest.
The bees can be dangerous,
Franklin said, “but only if they are
. attacked.”
“The best thing to do when you
encounter a swarm is to walk away,”
he said. “If they should get on you,
they won’t sting unless you try to
mash them. If they get in your hair,
don’t try to knock them off or mash
them or you’ll be stung. The safest
thing to do is to comb them out.”

cleared by local investigating agen
cies who attributed those cases to Lu
cas, and or (Ottis) Toole,” Adams

DPS spokesman Larry Todd said
Sunday the agency would be eager
to check on the Lucas case.
“It’s going to be real easy to open
the books and look at the specifics,
and we’re eager to do that,” Todd
said.
Among the examples offered by
the Dallas Times Herald:
• The Homicide Task Force
credited Lucas with the Oct. 1, 1982,
murder of a Conroe woman. But a
Texas Ranger chronology said Lucas
applied for unemployment benefits
or food stamps more than 1,000
miles away, in Decatur, Ill., on the
same day.
• Houston authorities accepted
Lucas’ confession and cleared a Sept.
12, 1981 murder in Houston. At the
time of the slaying, Lucas was in jail,
1,400 miles away in Pikesville, Mel.
• Rangers and Tyler authorities
accepted Lucas’s confession to the
Sept. 9, 1975, murder of a 69-year-
old man in Tyler. But records of the
Kaolin Mushroom Farms in Avon
dale, Pa., show Lucas was at work in
Pennsylvania on the day of the kill
ing. Pennsylvania state police told
the Times Herald they had reported
the information to Texas Rangers.
• To clear six killings and one at
tempted kidnapping between Oct. 2
and Nov. 2, 1978, authorities have
Lucas driving more than 11,000
miles in a 13-year-old Ford station
wagon, the Times Herald said.
According to the newspapers’ cal
culations, Lucas would have had to
have driven 4,100 miles in the last
four days of the journey alone, aver
aging 50 miles an hour, 24 hours a
day.
