In its final meeting of the semes
ter the Memorial Student Center
Council for 1984-85 approved a rec
ommendation Monday night allow
ing the University Department of
Food Services to prepare food in Ru
mours.
The recommendation, from the
building operations committee, pro
poses that the University food serv
ice, which is not currently in charge
of food preparation for the MSC-op-
erated Rumours, take over the food
preparation area of Rumours next
Fall.
The proposal also states that not
only will the food service depart
ment operate the food preparation
area, but it also will invest $15,904 in
order to improve Rumours.
Jim Reynolds, MSC Council secre
tary-treasurer, said the MSC doesn’t
have enough money to invest in the
updating of Rumours unless the
council alters its budget priorities.
“The MSC could go into the food
service, but that’s not why it was es
tablished,” Reynolds said. “Besides,
it’s a political decision. McDonald’s
would buy into that space, but again,
it’s a political decision.”
The food service department
doesn’t want the MSC in the cooking
business, said Dr. Carolyn Adair,
MSC Council student activities direc
tor.
A lack of funds isn’t the only rea
son the council is considering the
food services proposal.
“Rumours is in violation of health
standards right now,” Reynolds said.
“Although it’s not that bad, if the
MSC wanted to start preparing its
own food, there could be big health
problems.”
Currently only prepackaged food,
not food prepared in the MSC, is
served in Rumours.
Some additions to the proposal
would require that all tables and
chairs be replaced, that a new tele
vision set and cable be provided, that
the MSC maintain all policy setting
for Rumours with the exception of
the food service area, and that a
point plan and jukebox be installed.
Steve Hodge, MSC Council man
ager of University Center complex,
recommended four changes to the
proposal. He suggested the commit
tee’s requirements that include in
stalling carpet in the dining area,
keeping student workers on staff,
keeping the present Rumours man
ager and installing a salad bar be j ust
recommendations rather than re
quirements.
Student Body President David
Alders recommended an addition to
the proposal which would allow the
MSC Council to re-evaluate food
services after five or 10 years.
The proposal, with its additions,
must be approved by the food serv
ices department by June 1, or the
proposal will become void.
In other business, the MSC Pro
grams Committee on Black Aware
ness is planning a spring fashion
show for April 14 in 201 MSC at 6
p.m.
The next MSC Council meeting
will be held by the 1985-86 council.
Denis Lee Davis is the new council
president.
