Main College Station Ol* Bryan 9 693-0677 822-3119 Gay rights- (continued from page 1) the change, saying passage would grant minority status to homosex uals and legitimize their lifestyle. The proposed changes would have amended Houston’s civil serv ice and affirmative action practices to include the term “sexual orienta tion.” The original practice stated that only “race, color, age, disability, sex or national origin” could not be considered for hiring, firing or job promotions. However, the referendum failed by a 4-1 margin. Goodman said he was against the referendum because it did not cite cases of discrimination. “I was against the thing here in Houston because there was no need for it,” he said. Goodman says he is for “people’s rights” however. “I don’t think homosexuals have the right to go into a classroom and show their views,” he said. Lamarche said he supports gay rights, but like Goodner, he is not in favor of everything that homosex uals believe. “I’m prepared to talk more gener ally about the backlash against the group,” Lamarche said. On the other hand, Lamarche fa vored the Houston referendum that Goodman opposed. “I favor those types of referen- dums that prevent employment and housing discrimination,” he said. The debate will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium.
