The Good Samaritan Pregnancy
Service Inc. provides free counseling
and emotional support to women
with unplanned pregnancies.
Good Samaritan also provides
free pregnancy testing, assistance in
locating appropriate and affordable
medical care, adoption information
land referral, educational guidance
and assistance in locating housing.
Though the program has been in
the College Station area for three
years, the service recently has
changed locations. Now it is located
at South College and West Brook-
side in the old Home Finders build

tion’ often follow,” Marie Corscad-
den, director of the Good Samaritan
service, said. “We provide the re
sources so that well-informed deci
sions affecting a lifetime can be ma
de.”
Although the counseling is non-
judgemental, the service discourages
abortion, she said. However, post-
abortion counseling is available.
A professional staff is available,
but most of the work is done by vol
unteer counselors. These counsel
ors, most of which are Texas A&M
students, are trained by psychiatrists
and lawyers.
Each client is assigned to a coun
selor who will be her friend and con
fidant during her pregnancy. The
counselor also assists the pregnant
woman with the problems faced dur
ing pregnancy.
The program is affiliated with the
Catholic church, but clients and vol
unteers do not have to be Catholics.
The Good Samaritan Service dif
fers from Planned Parenthood be
cause it offers full-term pregnancy
counseling. Unlike Planned Paren
thood, Good Samaritan does not of
fer pre-pregnancy counseling about
birth control or about the choice to
become sexually active.
Hachtman
(continued from page 1)
tained the use of the quote was
fair and was not meant to be de
rogatory. As of Friday, however,
Halter said, “I just really resent
the approach he’s taken. I don’t
think it’s a fair characterization of
the council and especially me.
“Why is he student liaison if
the council is so anti-student? If
we’re so anti-student where^did
he come from? Where did his po
sition come from? Why have we
tried to do this?”
Several years ago the council
created the position of student
liaison which Hachtman occupied
for two years. Although his posi
tion is a non-voting one, Hacht
man said his tenure on the coun
cil gives him insight into how the
council operates.
Sally Miller, Planned Parenthood
director, said: “Planned Parenthood
offers a full health care program in
cluding general physical exams
which include checks for high blood
pressure and breast cancer.
“We also provide birth control
and counseling. We do not, how
ever, have the ability to counsel a
woman for the full-term of her preg
nancy because we see approximately
10,000 women a year. About 65 per
cent of those are Aggie students.”
Miller said Planned Parenthood is
willing to work in conjunction with
the Good Samaritan Program.
“We want our clients to make a
well-informed decision and be aware
of all alternatives,” she said.
Planned Parenthood, however,
does consider abortion as an alterna
tive though they do not perform
abortions on the premises.
Both the Good Samaritan and the
Planned Parenthood services are in
terested in community education
and are willing to speak to groups.
Women interested in becoming
counselors or in using the counsel
ing services at the Good Samaritan
Service should contact Corscadden
at 696-4289.
Halter said his reputation in
the community and among the
students hasn’t been harmed by
Hachtman’s campaign because, “I
don’t think the students know I
exist.”
He maintains that he is very
supportive of Texas A&M stu
dents.
“I’ve been teaching students at
A&M for 17 years,” Halter said.
“Fve received the former stu
dent’s award for faculty distin
guished relations in city affairs;
I’ve been an adviser for numer
ous clubs; I’ve been an under
graduate adviser with the depart
ment (political science) for years.”
Hachtman, an industrial distri
bution major from Dallas, faces
Roy Hann Jr. and Terri Tongco
in the election.
