^/voters’ guide - VP academic affairs James Cleary sophomore economics James Cleary I want to be vice president for academic affairs because 1 feel that there are several fundamen tal changes needed in the area of academics. Working on the aca demic affairs committee I have seen good and bad things done. What I want to do is, first and foremost, increase student input concerning academic matters. I want to create a Student Aca demic Board — an outlet stu dents can use if they have aca demic problems. 1 also want to create a joint academic commit tee — one between the Student Senate, the Faculty Senate and the administration. Specifically, I want to concen trate on several areas and imple ment them if possible. This in cludes course/instructor evaluations, Q-drop, preregis tration policy and core curric ulum. Finally, 1 will do my best to represent student concerns to the administration and the fac ulty. VP student services Carol Ellison sophomore journalism The student service commit tee of Student Government is re sponsible for all services that are available to students. It is my de sire to lead this committee in those areas that are in most need of improvement. I have been a member of the student service committee for two years and was a sub-chairman of Campus Im provement for one year. I am qualified to direct this committee in the future. If elected, I would like to con tinue and improve the Student Book Exchange. To secure more student input, I would continue the Issues and Grievances Com mittee. The campus is in need of more change machines for stu dents. I have already gotten one machine for the Commons area and would work for more in the future. I would have the com mittee work toward a solution to the bicycle and handicapped problems on campus. Carol Ellison VP external affairs Douglas Baird sophomore industrial distribution The office of vice president of external affairs has a pri mary function of serving as the liaison between the A&M stu dent body and the Bryan-Col- lege Station community. Con sequently the person seeking this position has to be able to represent a cross section of A&M’s student body as well as perform administrative func tions efficiently. I am this per son. During the 1984-85 school year I have served as the treasurer of the association of former Fish Drill team members. Administrative re sponsibilities include manag ing an account in the tens of thousands of dollars. This ex perience, combined with being a representative between the association and former stu dents, will be valuable in the transition to dealing with local businesses, governments and citizens. Additional people- oriented activities include Class of ’87 class council and fish camp counselor. Ken Skaggs senior agricultural economics By running for vice presi dent of external affairs, I hope to make Student Government a more visible and viable rep resentation of the student body. My qualifications in clude: Third Battalion sergeant major, member of Alpha Zeta National Agricultural Honor Fraternity, student senator (agricultural senior), member of the 1984 Alpha Zeta Re gional Conclave Committee, distinguished student and a Navy scholarship. If elected, I will work to make students’ views more re spected by the University and surrounding communities. I particularly want to see the Bryan and College Station city councils pay more attention to students’ needs and desires. I will investigate the feasibility of providing an A&M-run cable system for dorm students and work to keep tuition increases as small as possible. VP finance Mills Roberts senior biomedical science I would lime to be vice presi dent for finance because: 1) I was an active member on the Student Senate’s finance committee last year. 2) Last year was the first year in a long history of student serv ice fee increases that there was no increase. I hope to do the same next year. I hope to revise the bank study and provide fur ther research on other such VP rules and regulations Mike Sims I seek the office of vice pres ident of rules and regulations primarily because of the things I can do within the Student Senate that will in turn benefit the entire student body. Having been actively in- Clay Baker I am running for vice presi dent of rules and regulations because I believe I can offer our student body what it de serves: experienced, effective leadership from its Student Government representatives. I have two years experience on the Student Senate. As a freshman senator (‘83-‘84), I served on the rules and regula tions committee as well as ex ternal affairs’ Aggie Olympics committee. This year I served as Aston/Dunn senator and worked on the finance and stu dent services committees. The rules and regulations committee hasn’t accom plished everything it should Mike Sims sophomore agricultural education volved in the Student Senate as well as the only candidate who has served on the rules and regulations committee during the past year, I believe myself to be uniquely qualified to fill this office. As vice president of rules and regulations. I hope to of fer the students a change. In the past, many students felt that the Senate acted in an un reasonable manner. Strong ad vocacy of existing student in put programs as well as new programs is at the top of my list of priorities. Finally, I be lieve that if the Student Senate is to be effective, it must hear the voice of the students, and if ¥ th| students are to be heard, the time has come for their strong support of our return to reason. Clay Baker sophomore business have this year — we have seve ral unresolved issues to deal with: • We must delineate be tween “resolutions” and “bills.” This year an expression of opinion by the Senate (a reso lution) was vetoed, and the Senate has a right to express its opinion. • Reapportionment of Sen ate seats must be studied thor oughly to minimize problems during senate consideration. • We must refine the proc ess for filling vacancies. • We must resume reviews of the blue book and reinstate representation on the Univer sity rules and regulations com mittee. • If proposed constitutional reforms are passed, the com mittee must implement ways to ease in the transition to the new rules. I would also like to work with academic affairs on such issues as changing the present “Q-drop” and “dead week” policies. With your support, we will be able to effectively deal with the issues mentioned above and insure that Student Gov ernment acts and works re sponsibly for ALL students of Texas A&M.
