Waco still
picks Pepper
as #1 cola
Associated Press
WACO — In Waco, Dr Pepper
isn’t just a soft drink. It’s folklore.
The fruity cola was born in the
city 100 years ago, and Waco resi
dents still drink more Dr Pepper —
an average of 250 cans per person a
year — than any other city in the na
tion, according to the soft drink
company.
“It’s my favorite drink,” said Cur
tis Cleveland of the (neater Waco
Chamber of Commerce. “Here at
die chamber, we have a refigerator
full of nothing hut Dr Pepper, diet
or regular.”
Last week, the Dallas-based Dr
Pepper Co. announced it was selling
its bottling plants in Waco and Dallas
to a new management group for $95
million.
, But although 'the sale essentially
ends Dr Pepper’s formal ties to
Waco, the residents aren’t worried.
Since the new management group,
Dr Pepper of North Texas, will in
clude several of the current man
agers, residents say they will be deal
ing with old friends.
Jim Turner, chief executive offi
cer of the new management group,
said the plants in Dallas and Waco
supply 3 million people in 27 coun
tries, and account lor about $125
million in sales annually.
“Dr Pepper has been active in ev
ery single community event and ev
ery aspect of the city for 100 years,”
Cleveland said.
