Drug war' continues in Mexico
9 border stations closed
Associated Press
SAN DIEGO — Nine remote
U.S.-Mexico border crossings
were closed Sunday and immigra
tion officials armed themselves
after a tip that Mexican drug
dealers planned to kidnap and
kill immigration or customs offi
cials.
Major border crossings, such as
the one at San Ysidro and Otay
Mesa in southern California were
open for business, officials said.
Harold Ezell, Western region
commissioner of the Immigration
and Naturalization Service, said
Sunday the U.S. government
learned Thursday of reported
plans by Mexican drug dealers to
raid border stations and kill U.S.
officials.
On Friday, U.S. Customs Serv
ice intelligence officer Kenneth
Ingleby warned agents “that
within 10 days, an unknown
group of Mexican nationals in
tends to kidnap a U.S. Customs
agent” or immigration officer.
The nine closed crossings are
Amistad Dam, near Del Rio; Fal
con Dam, near Zapata; Los Eba-
nos, a hand-operated ferry south
of Laredo; Andrade, Calif.; Te-
cate, Calif.; Sasabe, Ariz.; Naco,
Ariz.; Morley Gate Crossing, a
pedestrian crossing in Nogales,
Ariz.; and Antelope Wells, N.M.
Shootout foils to locate DEA agent
Associated Press
MEXICO CITY — Authorities
searching a ranch for a kidnap
ped U.S. narcotics agent were
met by volleys of rifle fire and
five people were killed, including
a policeman and a woman, in the
gunfight that followed, officials
said Sunday.
But Enrique Camarena Sala
zar, the Drug Enforcement Ad-
ministraton agent kidnapped
Feb. 7 in Guadalajara, was not
found after the 1 l /2-hour battle at
the ranch in Michoacan state, lo
cated near the village of Vistaher-
mosa and about 60 miles east of
Guadalajara.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman
said American officials received
no information about Camarena
and his fate remains unknown.
The Attorney General’s office
said the federal agents arrived at
the ranch as part of the search of
the area around Guadalajara for
Camarena and Alfredo Zavala
Avelar, a Mexican agriculture de- •
partment pilot also kidnapped in
Guadalajara.
U.S. officials have said Mexico
is the base for as many as 75 ma
jor drug traffickers and 18 large
gangs, and that much of their ac
tivity is centered in Guadalajara,
320 miles northwest of Mexico
City.

JERUSALEM — Israel’s Cabinet

process which could take up to three
months to complete.
The Israeli army will abandon its
confrontation line with the Syrian
army in eastern Lebanon, but will re

Israeli soldiers are targets of dail)
ambushes.
Cabinet Secretary Yossi Beilin
said “the starting date is today" for
the pullback, but he said no date was
set tor its completion. Defense Min

stage could go on for 12 weeks be
fore it was over.
Prime Minister Shimon Peres has
said he hopes the third and final
stage of the withdrawal — back in
side Israel’s borders — will be com
pleted by the end of the summer
The decision to start the second
stage came as pressure mounted

Jan. 14, wnen the Cabinet first ap
proved the phased withdrawal plan,
at least 12 Israeli soldiers haveoeei
killed and at least 82 others injured

Israel pulled out of Sidon in the
first stage of its withdrawal, com
pleted Feb. 16. The next week, Iv
rael launched a tough anti-guerrilla
drive, sealing off villages anti search
ing house-to-house searches for
weapons. By Israel’s count, 16 sm-
peeled guerrillas were killed trying
to elude the dragnet.
In the pullout’s second stage, Is
rael will vacate about 385 square
