Cadets to lift off to maneuvers By KENNETH SURY Reporter It may look like a scene out of “A- pocalypse Now,” but when six Chinook helicopters land on the Texas A&M soccer field Saturday morning it will be the beginning of a more peaceful event — tne Corps of Cadets on maneuver. About 125 cadets will participate in the maneuvers this weekend at Camp Swift, a National Guard re serve near Bastrop. Capt. Gilbert Collins, operations officer with the Corps of Cadets, said the purpose of the maneuvers is to prepare junior and senior con tract cadets for their six weeks of training camp at Fort Riley, Kan. this summer. Cadets with a contract, Collins " said, will be commissioned as a sec ond lieutenant either for active duty or in the reserves after graduation. The cadets will gather in Parking Annex 21 behind the Military Sci ences Building at 9:30 a.m. Satur day, Collins said. They will be handed their rations, separated into six platoons of 20-25 cadets, and then will march to the soccer field. The Chinook helicopters, coming 'MARGARITA ME" T-SHIRTS! V from Dallas, will pick up the cadets around 1 1 a.m. A Chinook helicopter is a large Army helicopter which can safely load a maximum of 32 people. Collins said last year’s helicopter landings caught many people by sur prise. “Last year we did it and a lot of people wdndered what the hell was going on,” he said. “Traffic stopped. There was quite an interest in it.” After the 45-minute flight to Camp Swift, the cadets will spend the day learning extensive patrol ling, reconnaissance and other com bat and survival procedures, Collins said. Each platoon will be led by either an officer or a non-commissioned officer from A&M and a “blackhat,” a senior who has already completed^ summer camp, he said. After the day’s activities the cadets will do night patrols. Sunday morning the cadets will do a few more drills and then ride the helicopters back to the soccer field, Collins said.
