Awareness Week: Information; not sermon
Wednesday Week
LA. band at A&M
Sort of like the GoGos and
kind of like the Bangles, an
other girl rock group has
emerged from the Los Angeles
area and will turn up in the
Basement at 4 p.m. today.
Wednesday Week, not to be
confused with a week from
Wednesday which is March 6
and has nothing to do with the
subject at hand, favor ’60s-type
melodies and bouncy rhythms.
But unlike the GoGos and the
Bangles, Wednesday Week’s
music is moodier and sparer
with mysteiy lurking behind
seemingly innocent lyrics
about broken relationships.
The band has Kristi Callan,
lead vocal and guitar; Heidi
Rodewald, vocal and bass and
Kelly Callan (Kristi’s sis) on
drums.
The Callan sisters moved
through Texas, Oklahoma and
New York City’s Lower East
Side on their way to Los An
geles. At various times they
had guitarists, all male, that
didn’t hang with the band. Fi
nally the sisters hooked up
with Heidi, a native Califor
nian.
An Lj\. Life, Daily News re
view of their EP “Betsy’s Hou
se,” said:
“Here is an all-new, delight
fully enjoyable variation on an
old rock war horse — the con
cept album. In place of the
usually dopey cosmic imageiy
of other concept works, this lo
cal all-women trio has cap
tured the mood and feeling of
teenage anxiety on this five-
song EP, and it is a thrilling
success.”
Tickets for the MSC Base
ment Committee sponsored
concert are $2.50 eachA
“We’re there to talk about
the responsible use of alcohol
— not to preach, ‘Don’t drink!’
or talk about the evils of alco
hol.”
That’s what Jan Winniford,
student affairs assistant direc
tor, has to say about the up
coming Alcohol and Drug
Awareness Week, March 4
through March 6.
“The purpose of the pro
gams is education and to let
people know there is a place to
go on this campus for informa
tion,” she says.
Monday is devoted to drug
awareness programs. From 11
a.m. to 2 p.m., resource tables
will be set up in the hallway of
the Memorial Student Center
and from noon to 1 p.m., three
speakers will be presented. A
spokesman from the Bryan Po
lice Department will explain
the laws concerning drug
abuse and discuss penalties
and actions taken against any
one caught possessing illegal
drugs. Greenleaf Hospital is
sending someone to talk about
their chemical dependence
unit and the physiological and
psychlogical effects of drugs.
The other speaker will be from
the Brazos Family Institute.
Also on Monday, from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m., a non-alcoholic
beverage bar will be set up in
the MSC lobby,.where students
can obtain samples, recipes
and more information.
“This has been done here be
fore and is very popular with
the students,” Winniford says.
On Tuesday, Dr. Wayne Wi
ley from the Department of
Health and Physical Education
will have “alcohol simulated”
video games in the MSC hall
way. Winniford says these
games enact the circumstances
of an evening of drinking and
test the players responses. The
resource tables will be moved
to the Blocker Building .
Wednesday is devoted to al
cohol awareness programs.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., nine
resource tables will be set up in
the MSC hallway including
three from beer distributors:
Coors, Anheuser-Busch and
Miller. From noon to 1 p.m., a
speaker from the Texas Alco
holic Beverage Commission
will discuss legal issues, such
as DWI laws and the new legal
drinking age, and someone
from the Brazos Family Insti
tute will outline how to iden
tify problem drinkers. \
