Nationals await A&M pistol team

The A&M pistol team returned
from the southwest'sectionals in Ar
lington last weekend with a overall
first-place team finish.
A&M Coach Curtis Burns said the
team has a chance of finishing
among the nation’s top three at this
year’s National Collegiate Pistol
Championships, sponsored by the
National Rille Association and
hosted by the University of Texas-
Arlington, March 29-31.
“We did real well with what we
had last year,” Burns said, “but this
; have a lot of good material

Roger Davis, a graduate student
on the team agrees.
“Talent wise, we are deeper than
any team in the country," Davis said.
Pistol shooting is divided into
three categories, each using differ-
ent pistols and targets. The standi
competition uses a basic .22-cal
pistol and is shot f rom 50-feet.
The air competition uses an
pistol that shoots pellets Irani

allows contestants to modify (Ik

Burns said he expects to send
strong percentage of his 18-nt

“We’ve got the toughest
schedule we’ve ever had,” Brocl
said. “We’re going to California on
our spring break. That will be our
toughest competition. The Califor
nia teams seem to have a stronger
approach to the game, but everyone
is getting tough.
“We look for Cal State-Fullerton
to be after us. They have the re- will stay at that level. This is the op-

Brock said the early tests could
make the team much stronger by the
end of the year.
“I think the players understand
they have to get into their game
quicker,” Brock said. “This will push
