Spring —
(continued from page 1)
used to the real thing before moving
to harder slopes.
The mountain is about 30 minutes
from Glenwood and officials said
Tuesday 10 inches of new powder
snow has fallen on top of the 56-inch
packed powder base. The slopes are
00 percent open.
Sunlight, only about 20 minutes
from Glenwood Springs, is a moun
tain that isn’t hard to master.
Officals said Tuesday 3.5 inches
of new powder has fallen on the 51-
inch packed powder base.
Many people ski at Sunlight, espe-
ially those who are not serious
kiers. T he slopes can get crowded
n the afternoons.
Aspen, my favorite, is an old silver
boom town. The two slopes offer
some excellent skiing, both cross
country and downhill. The Aspen
Highlands challenge even the
world’s best skiers.
A day or half-day lift ticket can be
purchased and the tickets allow you
to ride either the pommel or chair
lift. Aspen Highlands maintains a
small practice slope, but if you aren’t
sure you are really ready for the real
thing, it is best to practice elsewhere.
Nighttime in Aspen can be a study
in romance. Riding through the
town on a horse-drawn carriage with
that special person as the snow
gently falls past antique street lamps
is not to be missed.
Officials said Tuesday Aspen
Mountain had 20 inches of new pow
der snow on the 61-inch packed
powder base. 97 percent of the runs
were open. Thirteen inches of new
powder has fallen on the 46-inch
powder base at the Highlands and
runs are 98 percent open.
Right now Aspen Highlands has
the best powder skiing in Colorado,
but if you are a fanatic for powder
snow, Steamboat Springs, the home
of the famous “champagne powder,”
is the place to be.
The area is collectively called
Steamboat Springs, but Steamboat
Village is about two miles from the
downtown Steamboat area.
The village offers a variety of
night spots as does the downtown
area. Be sure to visit Hershey’s in the
village area.
Also, a gondola ride is offered at
the village. The ride is wofth the
cost, especially if you want good pic
tures of beautiful Mount Werner to
remember spring break 1985 by.
Room is still available for the week
of March 11 in the downtown area,
but most accommodations in the vil
lage are full.
Eleven inches of new powder has
fallen on the 70-inch packed powder
base. The runs are 100 percent
open.
Finally, Vail, the celebrity skiing
town, needs to be mentioned.
Last year during spring break, all
of the local night spots and clubs
there ran out of ice for mixed
drinks: important information for
students to remember.
Their ice supply was depleted for
two days until more could be
trucked in from Denver.
Six inches of new powder has
fallen on the 60-inch packed powder
base and 95 percent of the runs are
open.

HUNTSVILLE — Two separate
stabbing incidents in the front of the
same cell at the Clemmens Unit of
the Texas Department of Correc
tions occurred within 17 hours and
officials said Tuesday the same in
mate is a suspect in both attacks.
TDC spokesman Charles Brown
laid that both of the stabbing victims
are in stable condition at hospitals.
In the firstjncident, inmate Rob
ert Lujan, 21, was stabbed as he
walked past an administrative segre
gation cell while returning from tak
ing a shower at the Clemmens Unit
near Brazoria. Brown said a suspect
reached through the bars of his cell
with a 4-inch sharpened metal shank
and stabbed Lujan in the stomach
and cut him on the chest.
Lujan, who is serving a 10-year
sentence for assault and burglary
from El Paso County, was in stable
condition Tuesday at the TDC hos
pital in Galveston, Brown said.
At 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, inmate
Rickey Goodwin, 21, was stabbed as
he walked past the same cell.
Brown said the same inmate is a
suspect in both stabbings. A second
inmate was in the cell for the second
stabbing and Brown said he also is
considered a suspect. There have
been no charges filed.
