Eble is one of four professors who will speak at a day-long conference Wednesday on teaching and re search at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The conference, sponsored by the Center for Teach ing Excellence, begins at 8:30 a.m. in 206 Memorial Student Center. In a phone interview Monday, Eble said teachers tend to devote more of their time and energy to re search rather than teaching oecause promotions often are based on re search. However, research should be con sidered equally with teaching and service, the three things on which teachers are evaluated, he said. “Many people feel a university’s primary purpose is research,” Eble said, “but many also feel the primary purpose is teaching. I think that un til we realize that teaching is the pri mary function to which scholarship, committee activities and service con tribute, we’ll continue to debate over research versus teaching.” Eble said it is acceptable for a small number of professors in a uni versity to concentrate on research, but the rest should be judged in. tea ching. “Scholarship in teaching should be honored,” he said. Other speakers at the conference will be Dr. Duwayne Anderson, Texas A&M University associate provost for research; Dr. Glenn Ross Johnson, A&M professor of curric ulum and instruction and educatio nal administration; and Dr. James Slice, professor of chemical engi neering at the University of Texas. Hachtman is considering running for a city council position and will announce his decision concerning the council position at 2 p.m. Wednesday in 501 Rudder, he said. Hachtman, a junior industrial dis tribution major, has served as Stu dent Government liaison to the city council for two years. He also rep resents off-campus ward II as a stu dent senator. “If I decide to run, I don’t want to be considered as just a student run ning for city council,” Hachtman said. He said his reasons for running would be two-fold. “I think students have not been effectively represented,” Hachtman said. “But I also think I can represent the needs of the people of College Station.” At the symposium, Hachtman said he will discuss his experiences as student liaison and student senator. He said he will also discuss the considerations potential candidates must make before declaring their candidacies. Lambda Sigma, the sophomore honor society, sponsors the weekly symposiums.
