No. 9 Tigers edge
past Aggie netters
By TRAVIS TINGLE
Sports Editor
Texas A&M’s llth-ranked men’s
tennis team dropped only its second
dual-match of the spring season, los
ing to No. 9 Trinity University, 5-4,
Tuesday.
Going in to yesterday’s match in
San Antonio, A&M, now 9-2 overall,
had never defeated the perennially
B Dwerful Trinity Tigers. But Coach
avid Kent’s Aggies came about as
close as you can get to upsetting
their first Top 10 team of the season.
Just how close were they? After
the six singles matches, the Aggies
were tied with the Tigers, 3-3, with
only the three doubles matches re
maining.
But in the last game of the last set
of No. 2 doubles, A&M’s duo of
Mark Smith and Russ Simmons
came up shy against Trinity’s Chris
Kennedy and Grayson Unaerwood,
who disposed of the Ags, 6-3, 3-6, 7-
5.
“It was just a heck of a tennis
match all the way around and some
fine collegiate tennis,” Kent said.
“We thought we had a good chance
to win it once we were tied after the
singles matches.
“I guess it’s probably my fault that
we lost, though. I just don’t really
know.”
Kent said the Tiger’s large parti
san crowd, something which the Ags
aren’t accustomed to playing in front
of, might have rattled the team
somewhat. However, Kent was still
disappointed with a few player’s per
formances during the match.
“(Trinity) gets real excited about
its tennis,” he said. “They have some
pretty volatile fans down there and
they get pretty loud, but (Grant)
Connell, (Marcel) Vos and (Dean)
Johnson were really the only one’s
that played well. The rest of the guys
didn’t play as well as they should
have, considering the competition.
“I really feel we should’ve won the
match.”
A&M can’t allow the loss to Trin
ity to linger in its memory too long.
The Aggies take on a tpugh North
east Louisiana team Thursday at
1:30 p.m. at the Omar Smith Tennis
Center.
“We had better bounce back from
this (loss to Trinity),” Kent said.
“Northeast Louisiana comes in here
Thursday and they always play us
tough. Maybe I’ll have to revise the
singles and doubles alignments be
fore then and see how that goes.”
Singles matches results:
Texas A&M’s Grant Connell
(above) won No. 1 singles,
but the Aggies (9-2) lost to
No. 9 Trinity, 5-4, Tuesday.
Connell defeated TU’s Kennedy, 6-
3, 6-2; No. 2 singles — TU’s Fanie
Reinach defeated A&M’s Kimmo
Alkio, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0; No. 3 singles —
TU’s Dexter MacBride defeated
A&M’s Greg Hill, 6-1, 6-3; No. 4
singles — A&M’s Marcel Vos de
feated TU’s Underwood, 7-6, 6-2;
No. 5 singles — TU’s Chris Greer
defeated A&M’s Mark Smith, 6-2, 6-
1; No. 6 singles — A&M’s Dean
Johnson def eated TU’s Eno Polo, 6-
1, 6-2.
Doubles matches results:
No. 1 singles — A&M’s Grant
No. 1 doubles — TU’s MacBride-
Reinach defeated A&M’s Connell-
Hill, 6-4, 6-2; No. 2 doubles— TU’s
Kennedy-Underwood defeated
A&M’s Smith-Simmons, 6-3, 3-6, 7-
5; No. 3 doubles — A&M’s Alkio-

per, 7-5, 6-2.

The Longhorns have a full court
press that eats most teams for lunch,
not to mention dinner and a mid
night snack.
Hickey said correcting small prob
lems this go around with Texas
could be the difference in the game.
“We sat down and watched the
(Texas) game film last night,”
Hickey said. “It was just tiny mis
takes like throwing the ball away. It
was not big physical skill type things.
Correcting little things will make the
game a lot closer.”

One can’t forget the Horns have a
string of 93 consecutive SWC victo
ries.
And who was the last team to de
feat the Longhorns in SWC play?
You’ve got it. The Aggies did it in
1978 by a 59-52 count. Still, Texas
leads the series 17-2.
“It’s always a dream to knock off
Texas in conference,” Hickey said.
“Everyone has that in the back of her
mind.”
It’s only a dream now. Tonight,
the Aggies could either lull the
Horns to sleep or awaken from a
nightmare.
