Garage business may
get military contract
Associated Press
DUNCANVILLE — Three years
ago, Bill Adaska started making ul
tralight aircraft in his garage.
Today he has designed a battle
field version of the plane and is sell
ing it to the U.S. government.
Adaska, the 39-year-old founder
of Rotec Engineering, says his
$10,000 Panther Plus can be out
fitted to destroy $5 million Soviet he
licopters or can be used as stealthy
“covert communications” vehicles.
Adaska says he is waiting for the
“paper work” to make its way
through the Pentagon, clearing the
Way for shipment of three military
versions of his new aircraft.
The Panther, unlike most ultra
lights, has a closed cockpit and wings
With a double airfoil, like conventio
nal airplanes, allowing it to fly twice
as fast as the original 30 mph model.
Adaska started Rotec 10 years ago
as a free-lance engineering business
in his garage in Duncanville.
Three years ago, he put up a sign
announcing he built recreational ul
tralight aircraft — small, open
planes for weekend pilots. By last
year, he had the Panther on the
drawing board.
Although a brightly colored ver
sion of the Panther Plus fits in well
With Rotec’s line of recreational air
craft, Adaska, a former helicopter
development and test engineer for
Aerospatiale Helicopter Corp., said
“the plane has a lot of bang for the
bucks” as a military craft.
For less than $10,000 per aircraft,
Rotec can give the U.S. Army a craft
capable of destroying Soviet-made
Hind series advanced attack helicop-
ers, Adaska said.
By attaching various kinds of va
rious types of missiles to the Panth
er’s wing strutts and giving the pilot
night vision goggles, the Panther can
be tailor-made for shooting down
the $5 million Soviet helicopter, Ad
aska claims.
But price isn’t the only advantage.
Adaska says by replacing the plane’s
aluminum wing components with fi
berglass, the little aircraft is quickly
converted into Duncanville’s first
stealth aircraft — hard to detect with
radar.
The Panther’s double muffler sys
tem makes the craft relatively quiet,
reducing engine noise to 58 decibels,
and the engine is covered with ra
dar-absorbent paint.
But the Panther’s military uses
don’t have to be restricted to night-
capades.
Adaska said the Air Force plans to
test Panthers as battlefield satellites
for use as “covert communications
relay platforms.”
A remote control version of the
craft could be used to relay informa
tion through laser signals from com
mand post to tanks and other posi
tions.
Israel has been using radio-con
trolled ultralights to draw anti-air
craft fire as a means of spotting the
battery, Adaska said.
Because the ultralight aircraft can
be packed into a crate 5 feet by 3 feet
by 18 feet, Adaska thinks his Pan
ther would be ideal for rescuing sol
diers and pilots behind enemy lines.
He imagines the crated plane
could be dropped from another air
craft, and then assembled by the
stranded pilot, who then would fly
out.
If Rotec wins a military contract to
mass produce the Panther, Adaska
said he plans to set up a separate op
eration in Duncanville to handle the
defense business and its related pa
per work.
Several of his engieering contacts
at LTV Corp., Bell Helicopter Tex
tron and Aerospatiale have ex
pressed interest in setting up sepa
rate Rotec defense operations, he
said.
