Soviet space toilet
tops U.S. system
Associated Press
JOHNSON SPACE CENTER,
Houston — Toilet facilities are sim
pler and work better on Soviet
spacecraft than aboard the Ameri
can space shuttle, according to a
French astronaut who flew aboard
the Russian craft.
Frenchman Jean-Loup Chretien,
who flew in the Soviet Salyut and
Soyuz spacecraft, said the cosmo
nauts use a toilet system that uses air
to collect the solid waste in a bag.
He told the Houston Chronicle
the bag is then sealed, placed into a
larger bag which is later put into a
big aluminum can. When the can is
filled, it is jettisoned into space.
For the space shuttle, the National
Aeronautics and Space Administra
tion spent $12 million for a potty de
sign by General Electric. As with the
Soviet system, the shuttle toilet uses
air pressure to collect the wastes, but
processing and storage of the wastes
is more complicatea and less reli
able.
Both spacefaring nations faced
the same engineering problem in de
veloping a space toilet. The human
anatomy was designed to use gravity
to dispose of its wastes. The matter is
ejected and carried away by gravity,
and, in modern society, Hushed out
of sight by water.
But in orbit, where there is no
gravity, a new system had to be used.
The space shuttle toilet consists of
a throne that draws air from the
cabin. A user’s backside is sealed to
the seat and air pressure carries
away the waste matter.
At first, the shuttle toilet included
a motor-driven slinger that was to
break up the solid waste particles
and distribute them on the insides of
the bowl. The matter was then
freeze-dried and the resulting dust
carried away by air pressure.
Astronauts complained on flight
after flight that the system failed, of
ten resulting in a tan haze inside the
space cabin. The toilet also froze
during one flight, and on another
mission an astronaut had the un
pleasant task of cleaning a tube
jammed with a putty-like brown
material.
But Dan Germany, manager of
the shuttle flight equipment office at
the Johnson Space Center, said he
now believes the shuttle toilet prob
lem has been solved.
‘Cheers’ Coach dies
of a heart attack at 61
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Actor Nick
Colasanto, who portrayed the lov
able bartender “Coach” on the NBC
comedy series “Cheers,” died Tues
day of a heart attack at his home, a
network spokesman said. He was 61.
Colasanto was recuperating from
a recent hospital stay for a heart ail
ment when he suffered the attack
while watching television, said Bill
Kiley, NBC’s director of publicity for
comedy shows.
Colasanto’s doctor had said the ac
tor was feeling fine Monday when
the physician talked to him, Kiley
said.
Colasanto, who also was an accom
plished director, had missed filming
of the last five episodes of the popu
lar series because of illness, Kiley
said. Four episodes remain to be
filmed.
Friends and co-workers had be
come concerned because Colasanto
had lost so much weight recently, Ki
ley said.
