Texas, Tech hold
national ranking
Associated Press
The first 11 teams held their posi
tions in the weekly Associated Press
women’s college basketball poll an
nounced Tuesday.
Top-ranked Texas, which has
won 91 straight games in the South
west Conference, received 55 first-
place votes and 1,192 points.
Long Beach State, No. 2, once
again received the other five first-
place votes from the nationwide
panel of 60 women’s coaches.
Texas Coach Jody Conradt is
pleased over the way her team has
avoided the crippling injuries of last
year. However, Conradt is slightly ir
ritated over criticism of the competi
tion in her conference.
“I’m getting tired of hearing how
weak the Southwest Conference is,”
Conradt said before her team hosted
Arkansas Tuesday night. “If we lost
a couple of games then we’d sud
denly near how tough the league is.
“My record against Southeastern
Conference teams this year is as
good as it is against Southwest
schools. What’s so tough about the
Sun Belt Conference. All they have
is Old Dominion and Western Ken
tucky. We have two ranked teams.
“I see many leagues in the stand
ings with only one or two strong
teams.”
Meanwhile, the air of calm re
flected in this week’s poll should end
by the time the next vote is taken.
No. 6 Louisiana Tech already has
lost to No. 4 Northeast Louisiana,
Monday night, as the Lady Indians
avenged its only setback of the sea
son.
Tech hosts No. 3 Old Dominion
Wednesday in one of the nation’s
better rivalries.
No. 5 Mississippi needs to win at
No. 9 Auburn Wednesday or lose by
less than seven points. Otherwise the
Tigers, instead of the Rebels, would
host the SEC final four.
No. 10 Penn State travels to West
Virginia, which is hunting for the
right victim to help make the Moun
taineers a top 20 team.
In the Second 10, things have got
ten near the desperate stage for two-
time defending national champion
Southern California. The Women of
Troy have dropped to No. 13, their
lowest position in the poll since De
cember, 1980, when Pam and Paula
McGee were freshmen.
More important, USC must beat
Fullerton State Thursday night and
Long Beach State Saturday night,
both at home, or forget about win
ning the Western Collegiate Athletic
Association title.
No. 15 North Carolina State,
which made the biggest move in
leaping five positions from 20th,
needs two victories this week over
Wake Forest and Maryland to clinch
the regular season Atlantic Coast ti
tle.
No. 19 Kentucky could leave the
SEC with only three representatives
in the poll if the Lady Kats lose to ei
ther Tennessee or Georgia.
No. 20 Nevada-Las Vegas, which
entered the list for the first time
since March, 1980, needs to beat
Cal-Irvine on the road Saturday to
take sole possession of first place in

Rockets 126, Suns 114
HOUSTON — When the Rockets
faltered in the fourth quarter of
their battle against the Phoenix Suns
Tuesday night, Ralph Sampson
showed the stuff that made him the
NBA’s Most Valuable Player.
Sampson, a 7-foot-4 forward who
won that honor in the league’s All-
Star game Sunday, pitched in nine
points in a four-minute spurt to en
sure the 126-114 victory over the
Suns.
“I came out ready to play after the
All-Star game,” said Sampson, who
hit a team-high 26 points. “It was at
that point in the game when I had to
take control.”
Houston Coach Bill Fitch said of
Sampson that “I felt like when it got
down to 11 points, he was one of the
guys that said, ‘Let’s take over,’ and I
thought he did.”
The win was Houston’s eighth in
the last 11 games and their third in
four meetings this season with the
Suns. The Rockets’ record went to
29-21, while the Suns dropped to 25-
26.
Akeem Olajuwon had 24 points
and Lewis Lloyd 22 for Houston.
Larry Nance led the Suns with 29
points, followed by Jay Humphries
with a season high of 26.
Mavericks 131, Cavaliers 112
RICHFIELD, Ohio — Rolando
Blackman scored 12 of his season-
high 35 points in the third quarter as
the Dallas Mavericks streaked from a
halftime tie to a 20-point lead on the
way to a 131-112 victory over the
Cleveland Cavaliers Tuesday night.
Dallas, winning its fourth straight,
outscored Cleveland 42-22 in the
third quarter, capping the outburst
when Mark Aguirre hit a three-point
shot at the buzzer to put the Maver
icks ahead 104-84.
Cleveland got no closer than 12
the rest of the way as Blackman
added 10 fourth-quarter points to
keep Dallas comfortably ahead.
Aguirre finished with 30 points
for the Mavericks.
World B. Free scored 26 points
and Phil Hubbard added 21 for the
Cavaliers, 16-34.*
Dallas made 24-of-24 free throw
attempts in the game to set a team
record for most free throws made
without a miss.
Spurs 127, Kings 109
SAN ANTONIO — Johnny
Moore and George Gervin each
scored 23 points to lead the San An
tonio Spurs to a 127-109 win over
the Kansas City Kings Tuesday
night.
San Antonio moved over the .500
mark for the first time since Nov. 6
with a 26-25 record. The Kings are
now 16-24 after losing six of their
last seven games.
The Spurs, who outrebounded
the Kings 56-30 and shot almost 60
percent for the game, built a 22-
point lead going into the second
quarter and led at the half 67-47.
They blew it open in the third pe
riod, leading by 30 points, 96-66,
late in the period.
Mike Mitchell had 22 points for
San Antonio, and Artis Gilmore had
17 points, 10 rebounds and seven of
the Spurs 10 blocked shots. Reggie
Theus had 21 points and Mike
Woodson had 18 for the Kings.
