Statue’s facelift
Associated Press
LIBERTY ISLAND, N.Y. — The
sign on the trailer reads "Palisades
General Hospital,” but the nurse
who tends to workers renovating the
Statue of Liberty laughs at the over
statement.
The 8-by-15-foot trailer in the
shadow of the famed beacon of New
York Harbor contains little more
medical equipment than the average
ambulance, no emergency room and
“just one nurse,” says Lisa Rogers.
“I’m part of history,” the woman,
25, said during an interview inside
the base of the monument. The
statue is covered in scaffolding, for a
facelift before its 1986 cenitenpial
celebration. “I can tell.my grandchil
dren that back in the 198ds, I Was
part of the statue’s restoration.”
As the nurse for the $23() million
project, Rogers said She rhust have
the physical agility tb scale the scaf
folding up the 305-foot monument
in case of ah emergency; the creativ
ity to fill the long hours between pa
tients; and the ingenuity to treat
workers who speak little English.
And the fortitude to endure a
harsh winter. When the wind cuts
through her thinly insulated trailer
and blows papers on her bulletin
board. Miss Rogers seeks refuge in
side Lady Liberty.
She brings along plenty of read
ing material. With an average of
only one patient a day, she said, she
typically finishes four newspapers
and a book.
During her first three months at
the medical trailer, which was sup
plied by the North Bergen, N.J.,
hospital whose sign it bears, most of
Rogers’ cases have involved minor
cuts and illnesses. She says her motto
is, “When in doubt, ship ’em out.”
The victim of a major injury
would be taken by helicopter to Pali
sades General.
“We can get someone here from
Liberty Island in exactly five min
utes,” says hospital Vice President
Bob Routh.
But the injuries Rogers does han
dle may require expertise beyond
the meaical texts.
A craftsman for a French met-
itlworking company that is helping
rep&if that country’s gift to the
United States was Overcome by back
pain as he worked on reconstruction
of the torch. “He spoke a little En
glish -— enough to tell me where it
hurts,” she recalled.
Rogers sought assistance from the
United Nations, where an employee
referred her to a bilingual chiro
practor.
While a multilanguage dictionary
helps her communicate with the for
eign workers, a thick skin helps her
get along with the more chauvinistic
members of the all-male work force.
Rogers routinely rejects requests to
make coffee, answer phones and
clean other trailers.
She takes the symbolism of the
Statue of Liberty quite seriously. All
four of her grandparents arrived
from Lithuania in the early 1900s
and were among the 12 million im
migrants processed through nearby
' ' id.
