VICTORIA — Just who is the
man who calls himself “Kenneth
Earl Barnard?”
Texas law enforcement authori
ties would sure like to know. They
want him for bank robberies in Vic
toria and Corpus Christi. “Barnard”
is also wanted by police in Utah and
California for other savings and loan
robberies.
Here are a few things investiga
tors know about the suspect:
• He uses a number of aliases. He
has an Arkansas driver’s license is
sued in the name of Kenneth Earl
Barnard. However investigators
have discovered Kenneth Earl Bar
nard was the name of an infant who
died in 1941. Other aliases used by
the suspect include John Roger Can-
oyerr, Edward R. Bright, Edward
Grant, and William Grant Osborn.
• The suspect is in his early 40s, is
a white male, five to six feet tall, 180
to 200 pounds, has short sandy
blond hair, blue eyes, and has a small
facial blemish above the upper lip on
the right side.
• He is an avid bridge player and
compulsive gambler and travels ex
tensively in the southwest and west
ern states.
Investigators from the Corpus
Christi Police Department and the
Texas Rangers say “Barnard”
robbed the First Texas Savings Asso-
the suspect switched vehicles shir
after the robbery and was lasts
driving a Honaa motorcycle i
Arkansas plates.
Investigators say “Barnard"als,-
a suspect in the Dec. 28,
armea robbery of Presidential!
ings and Loan in Salt Lake
Utah, and the Feb. 4, 1982, robl
of Gibraltar Savings and Loan;
Sacramento, Calif. In both oft
robberies, he used the alias “V
Grant Osborn.”
‘Kenneth Earl Barnard’
ciation in Corpus Christi on Feb. 8,
1984, at about 12:30 p.m.
Then on Fri., March 3, 1984, the
same suspect allegedly robbed the
Goliad Savings and Loan in Victoria
at about 2 p.m. Witnesses say the of
fender entered the Savings and
Loan armed with a blue steel hand
gun, possibly an automatic. At least
$100 worth of marked money was
taken in the robbery, all in $20 de
nominations. The vehicle used in the
robbery was rented from a Ford
dealership in Victoria. Apparently

landed “Barnard” on this wes

House wants battleship port here
nuclear waste dump elsewhere

Associated Press
AUSTIN — The state House
voted Wednesday to ask federal offi
cials to put a Navy battleship port in
Texas and put the nation’s nuclear
waste elsewhere.
Also Wednesday, House members
voted to invite Vice President
George Bush to speak to a joint ses
sion of the Legislature on Feb. 27.
The three motions — quickly
approved on voice votes — made for
one of the longest sessions so far this
year in the House, about 20 minutes.
Rep. John Willy, R-Angelton,
asked all House members to support
the six Texas coastal cities that want
to be home to a battleship. A total of
16 cities from Florida to Texas are
seeking the new Navy port. The res
olution, already approved in the
Senate, got voice vote approval in
the House.
Rep. David Hudson, D-Tyler,
won approval for his resolution
asking the LJ.S. Department of En
ergy to forget about putting the na
tion’s high-level nuclear waste dump
in Deaf Smith County. A site in the
Panhandle county — about 30 miles
from Amarillo — is among three fi
nalists. The other sites are in Nevada
and Washington state.
Hudson’s resolution echoes the
fears of area residents who are c
cerned about the region’s waters;
ply. He told the House the dm
could endanger the Ogallala;
Santa Rosa aquifers, the
sources of water in the area.
Hudson asked House memben
pay closer attention to the resoluti I
than they usualiv do for such ;;
tions.
“This isn’t for the basketball to !
or the Boy Scouts," he said of his rt
olution.
U.S. Sen. Llovd Bentsen, i
Texas, has scheauled a Mori |
public hearing in Hereford concerl
mg the nuclear waste dump.
