Big East teams still
dominate Top 20

St.John’s, which puts its 13-game
winning streak on the line Saturday
in a Big East Conference road game
against Villanova, remained No. 1
for the second straight week in the
Associated Press college basketball
poll announced Tuesday.
The 18-1 Redmen, who had to
come from 14 points down to beat
Seton Hall 87-76 Monday night, at
tracted 60 of 62 first-place votes and
1,238 points from tne nationwide
panel of sports writers and broad
casters.
Last week St. John’s beat Provi
dence 77-60 and Connecticut 97-64
and is one of four Big East teams in
the Top 20. Three of those, St.
John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse,
are in the top six.
Georgetown stayed No. 2, Mem
phis State No. 3 and Southern Meth
odist No. 4.
The Hoyas, 19-2, who held the
top spot in the preseason poll and
the first nine regular-season polls
before losing two straight, landed
one first-place vote and 1,153 points.
Memphis State, 17-1, received the
remaining No. 1 vote and 1,126
points, 93 ahead of Southern Meth
odist, 18-2.
Duke, fourth last week, moved up
a notch with 909 points. Syracuse,
the only team besides St. John’s to
beat Georgetown, advanced from
No. 9 to sixth with 899 points, while
Oklahoma remained No. 7 with 855.
Michigan (769 points) was eighth
followed by Illinois (748) and
Georgia Teen (704) to complete the
Top Ten.
Nevada-Las Vegas, boasting a 16-
game winning streak, the longest
winning streak in Division I, leaped
from No. 16 to head the Second
Ten.
Iowa; Kansas, Louisiana Tech,
North Carolina, Oregon State,
Tulsa, DePaul, Villanova and
Maryland round out the Top
Twenty.
Iowa, 18-4, is the only newcomer
to the poll this week after registering
road victories over Big Ten Confer
ence rivals Indiana anti Ohio State.
Alabama-Birmingham, 19-5,
which rejoined the Top Twenty last

HOUSTON — The sputtering
Houston Cougars, who have been
starting slow and finishing fast, are
stuck with a four-game losing streak
going into Wednesday night’s South
west Conference clash against
Texas.
The Cougar’s early first-half per
formances in each of the losses have
put Coach Guy Lewis in jeopardy of
directing a five-game losing streak
for only the second time in his
coaching career.
In three straight conference losses
to Texas A&M, Southern Methodist
and Texas Christian, the Cougars hit
a combined six of 30 shots in the first
five minutes.
The same early-game malaise was
evident during Sunday’s 77-76 non
conference loss to Illinois.
Houston hit only three of 15 shots
over the first 10 minutes against Illi
nois. The Cougars never led, but
they fought back in the closing min
utes and had a chance to take the
lead when Eric Dickens scooped up a
loose ball and went in for an ung
uarded basket.
Dickens fell and missed the shot.
“I think they run out of gas trying
to come from behind all the time,”
Lewis said. “It’s like Eric missing that
basket. When you are 10 up it’s no
problem but whey you are three
down it’s catastrophy.”
The Cougars’ half-court trapping
defense got them back in the game
against Illinois, but they couldn’t
overcome another recent trend —
hot shooting individual perfor
mances by opponents.
“I’d judge that we didn’t start out
that good against Illinois but when
two guys go 15 for 15 in the first half
you nave to wonder,” Lewis said.
Illinois’ Anthony Welch hit eight
of eight shots in the first hdlf and
Doug Altenberger hit six in a row.
Bluechip Dykes likes mini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Hart Lee Dvkes of Bay City, Texas, one of the na
tion’s top high school receivers, says ne is leaning toward a college football
career at Illinois.
“I’ll probably go to Illinois,” said Dykes, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound athlete
who completed his visit to the UI campus Monday.
Dykes said he will not make a decision before next Monday — two days
before NCAA letters-of-intent may be signed.
“We’re hopeful, but we don’t want to get everyone excited,” said Illinois
Coach Mike White. “A lot can happen between now and next Wednesday.”
Dykes also has been considering Oklahoma, but said Coach Barry
Switzer does not call the pass as often as White.
“If I want the ball, Illinois is the place,” Dykes said.

Welch finished hitting 13 of 16 shots
and Altenberger was eight of nine.
In an 85-80 loss to TCU, Dennis
Nutt pumped in 28 points against
the Cougars. Afterwards’, Nutt said
he wished he could play all his games
in Hofheinz Pavilion.
“The rim looks 10 feet around for
me in here,” Nutt said.
Altenberger also enjoyed his court
time in Hofheinz, where the Cou
gars have lost only 25 times in 211
games over 14 years.
“The rim is so soft, the ball just
bounces off and into the net,” Alten
berger said. “I guess they need it to
be soft because the jam so much.”
But even the Cougars’ dunk show
has been short-qircuited this season
with sophomore Rickie Winslow
leading the team with 38 of the
team’s 63 slams. A year ago, Akeem
Olajuwon had 85 of the team’s 194
dunks over the full season.
Even team meetings haven’t
helped.
Cougar co-captains Dickens and
Reid Cettys called for a team meeti-
ing without coaches present follow
ing Friday night’s 85-80 loss to
Texas Christian.
“They played about the same but
I still like team meetings and have al
ways encouraged them,” Lewis said.
“It’s good for the players to be com
municating.”
Lewis could at least feel encour
aged that his teams have been able to
get back into the games after their
slow starts. But he doesn’t.
“Moral victories get you fired,”
Lewis said.
