Soder- cjuist, executive vice president of ad ministration and distribution for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said Monday. Soderquist’s lecture opened the Retailing Career Fair Symposium sponsored by the Center for Retail ing Studies. Soderquist said it is important for students to get involved in some thing they like, something they’re in terested in. ‘A lot of people go into retailing for invalid reasons,” Soderquist said. “If you’re planning on going into re tailing, vou must ask yourself why you’ve chosen that field.” He said one person out of every eight is employed in the field of re tailing. Many factors are involved which lead students to a field in retailing, Soderquist said. Students must ex amine their abilities, skills and inter ests to see if they match a retailer’s requirements, he said. Values also are important in mak ing a judgement about a career field, Soderquist said. Different values and standards will influence the area a person gets involved in, he said. Another area which Soderquist recommends examining is one’s idea of success. Many people are caught up in the idea of success meaning promotions and big dollars, he said. “Don’t use the world’s guide of success as you’re guide,” Soderquist said. “Ask yourself what success means to you.” Soderquist discussed the pros and cons of retailing. “Merchandising is fun,” he said. “It is an area where you can express yourself and use your imagination to do things that have not been done before. There is also opportunity to make errors in the decision-making process. It’s great be in a field where you can make errors and it doesn’t blow you out. “Retailing is a great challenge You’re always dealing with change and goals are set high because youie | constantly trying to be better ,u yesterday.” The negative points, however, b elude long hours, hard workandi lot of paperwork, Soderquist said. “If these things are really con cerns to you ana bother you, you need to re-examine your decisions go into retailing,” he said. Retailing is a people-oriented business and, Soderquist said, i you’re a solo player you’re not going to be successful. “Now’s a good time to get into re tailing,” he said, “and in recem years, women are having a greaiti and greater opportunity in tin field.” Texas /\&M is becoming oneol the outstanding schools in the natioi as far as preparing students for tlii field of retailing, Soderquist said. "You’re very fortunate at Tffl A&M to be involved in the program developed here,” he said. Senate votes to extend prescription law Associated Press AUSTIN — The Senate voted Monday to re-enact a war-on-drugs bill that would a extend a 1981 law due to expire early next year. Sen. Ray Farabee, D-Wichita Falls, said a 1981 law to stem forgeries of prescriptions for drugs such as Quaaludes and amphetamines had been “a very effective deterrent." The law requires the use of special triplicate prescription blanks issued by the Department of Public Safety. One copy is kept by the doctor, one by the pharmacy and the other goes to the DPS. In the first year of the program according to written backgroumi material, pharmacies showed a l! percent decrease in prescriptions foi drugs "with a valid medical exos but u high potent in} for abuse-ad& tion.” Prescriptions fell an addition^ 111 percent the second year SOFTBALL SPECIAL Aclidas s 17.95 Uppers: Nylon/Leather reinforcements, Sole: Rubber shell.
