Caperton
(continued from page 1)
has a job to provide an on-going sys-
;r education,”
tematic review of highet
Caperton said.
He said a comprehensive, long-
range plan for higher education in
Texas probably would show that “u-
niversities should focus on their
areas of strength, instead of trying to
be all things to all people.
“This doesn’t mean we should
turn our backs on other areas. For
example, not everyone can have the
top engineering college in the na
tion. This doesn’t mean we should
ignore liberal arts at A&M, but that
we must pay attention to the
stronger areas too.”
He said the Legislature’s top
priority will be maintaining adequate
funding for higher education.
“I want the message to go out
through Texas and throughout the
rest of this country, that Texas is not
going to retreat from our commit
ment to quality higher education,”
he said.
Caperton commended Texas
A&M President Frank Vandiver for
having the courage to say the LBB’s
proposed 20 percent budget cut
would be disastrous for the Univer
sity.
“I believe it to be true,” he said. “I
believe it to be incumbent on A&M
to save money, but no ongoing orga
nization or institution can suffer a 20
percent cut without traumatic and
serious effects. Businesses can’t do it,
agencies can’t do it, and schools cer
tainly can’t do it.”
