Dual-career relationships
subject of 10-part seminar

Communication skills are impor
tant in managing the pressures aris
ing from dual-career relationships,
Dr. Anne C.P. Schroer says.
Schroer, a psychologist at the
Texas A&M Student Counseling
Service, says women with a career
are generally happier with their
marriage. However, the men tend
not to be quite as satisfied if their
wife has a career, Schroer says.
A ten-part seminar that begins to
day will focus on the problems in
dual-career relationships. Schroer
and two doctoral interns, Martha
Schramm and Terry Marshall will
lead the seminar.
Schroer says statistics show that by
1990, 80 percent to 90 percent of
women college graduates will be in
the work force.
The seminars are not restricted to
married couples and will deal with
the problems of power, finances,
child care, residential chores and
finding time for each other.
“Trade-offs are what make these
type of relationships work,” Schroer
says. “The man has to help with the
parenting and household tasks.”
Schroer says she sees a nice
change in the current generation of
men.
Tonight’s seminar will be a basic
overview of the dual-career couple
including career work vs. housework
and the problems of identity — tra
ditional roles vs. modern roles.
Schroer urges both members of
the couple to attend because many
activities will be done in pairs. At
least one of the couple should be a
Texas A&M student.
Effective communication and lis
tening skills will be the topic for the
second seminar on Feb. 12. Also to
be discussed are the means of deal
ing with conflict and delegation.
