Service
sells fake
diplomas
Associated Press
DALLAS — Fake diplomas from
more than 300 colleges, including
Texas A&M and other Texas uni
versities, are being used for a wide
range of professions which require
licensing, the FBI says.
The FBI notified the Texas uni
versities this week that a raid on an
Oregon mail-order house produced
the names of 70 people who bought
bogus diplomas modeled on degees
from the schools.
“Right now we don’t have any de
tails on the Texas ‘graduates’ on how
many people were actually using the
degrees,” Allen Ezell Jr., head of the
FBI’s “Dipscam” sting operation,
said. “It (the investigation) is not
over, not by a long shot.”
Ezell said some of the diplomas
were issued in the name of Texas
A&M, the University of Texas the
University of Texas at El Paso,
Texas Christian University and
Texas Southern University.
Registrars at the five schools said
Wednesday they are checking the list
to determine whether any of the
people who bought the pnony de
grees were actual graduates of the
schools.
About 13 of the bogus diplomas
were from Texas A&M, 60 UT, two
from Texas Southern University in
Houston and one from TCU.
Ezell said company records show
that 200 diplomas were bought by
Texans but most of them were for
out-of-state institutions.
He said the FBI may press
charges against anyone using the
fake degrees to practice regulated
professions in Texas.
“We’ve seen people in law en
forcement, in education — across
the board in the professions,” Ezell
told the Dallas Times Herald.
Investigators said the 70 names
were among more than 2,500 found
by federal agents who searched cus
tomer records at the Alumni Arts di
ploma reproduction service in
Grants Pass, Oregon, in June. .
The Oregon business sold diplo
mas for $39.95 and advertised in
such magazines as Rolling Stone, Sci
ence Digest and Psychology Today,
federal officials said.
The FBI is mainly interested in
identifying people who might be us
ing the fake diplomas in professions
where their performance might en
danger the public such as medical
pathology, architecture, nursing and
clinical psychology.
Ezell said it appears no medical
doctor’s degrees were issued.
He said the Oregon firm was
raided in conjuction with the 4-year-
old “Dipscam” sting operation tar
geted at services selling bogus de
grees.
Alumni Arts owner Dennis E.
Gunter has pleaded guilty to one
count each of federal mail and wire
fraud. He faces up to five years in
jail and up to a $5,000 fine.

“It would cause considerable cuts
to the faculty and staff at Texas
A&M,” Vandiver said. Incomes in
the community would be reduced by
about $125 million a year.
Hansen noted the importance of
preserving a strong faculty at Texas
A&M. If one faculty member leaves,
a heavier work load will be placed on
the remaining faculty members,
causing instability ana decline in
quality.
“We cannot let higher education
slip,” he said.
The board will inform the legis
lators about the impacts of the bud
get cuts before the LBB makes its fi
nal decision.
The Committee for Service Units
recommended the establishment of
a space research center for long
term utilization. The mission of the
center is to develop the nation’s lead
ing university-based research pro
gram.
The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration and several in
dustries would like to participate,
Hansen said.
“We think it is very important that
we get a front line in space,” he said.
A space center could be used to
study the effects of radiation and to
experiment with processes and
products in a zero-gravitational at
mosphere.
Because Texas A&M has achieved
national recognition for its prepara
tion program for elementary and
secondary school principals, the
Committee for Academic Campuses
will recommend the establishment of
a Principals’ Center in the College of
Education.
