Pollster George Shipley said his survey showed 66 percent support for repeal of the law that effectively closes most stores on Sundays. 26 percent of the about 700 people questioned favor the law and tne rest had no opinion, he said. A similar survey done by the Texas Poll at Texas A&M University in 1984 showed 70 percent of those surveyed support repeal. The Shipley survey also showed 55 percent in favor of legalized pari- mutual betting, 35 percent opposed and 10 percent with no opinion. A state lottery was favored by 57 per cent while 27 percent were against it and 16 percent had no opinion. The poll was paid for by Texans for Blue Law Repeal Inc., a coalition formed to push for repeal that in cludes Joske’s, Zale Jewelers and Target. “I’m increasingly convinced that the feeling of an overwhelming ma jority of Texans is that it’s time for a change,” said Sen. Ray Farabee, D- Wichita Falls and sponsor of a bill to repeal the law. The Texas Automobile Dealers Association, small retailers and resi dents of some rural areas have been fighting for repeal for years. But Shipley said 68 percent of the voters surveyed in nine rural dis tricts favor repeal. “Traditionally we’ve always as sumed that rural areas are oppose to any change in the blue law,’’Fil bee said. “We now have new inlfp mation that dispels these myths." [ Two-thirds of those surveyed* they see no religious basis for doa: stores on Sunday. Eighty percent of those sunni favored some revisions to w more of the restricted items tol sold on Sundays, Shipley said. !:■ blue law prohibits the sale of| items, including hardware, apl antes and clothing, on consecttl Saturdays and Sundays.
