If the Texas Tech women’s basket
ball team is worthy of their No. 14
national ranking, then, by a head-to-
head comparison, Texas A&M
should be in the Top 20.
Of course rankings aren’t always
indicative of how a team will per
form on any given night. The Red
Raiders (13-3, 5-1 in SWC) squeaked
by the Aggies, 81-74, Wednesday
night in a game that really wasn’t de
cided until the final minute.
A&M (8-8, 1-5 in SWC) was disap
pointed after losing to Tech.
“We should have won the game,”
A&M Head Coach Lynn Hickey
said. “We just weren’t ready the first
part of the game.
“We did some nice things. If we
play like this in all our games, I don’t
think a lot of people are going to
beat us. It was more our fault to
night that we lost rather than Tech
winning the game outright.”
A&M got within four points of
Tech several times during the sec
ond half, but just couldn’t take the
lead. Hickey said it was a lack of con
fidence on the Aggies part.
“We need trial little spark,”
Hickey said. “We need to believe
that we can do it. When we walk out
on the floor with the confidence that
we can do it, we’ll beat these people.
“They worked hard and I’m real
proud of them, but it’s kind of like
kissing your sister until you get the
Aggie center Janet Dunkham said
the Ags just couldn’t keep the mo
mentum once they got it.
“We’d get close and then have a
four minute lapse,” Dunkham said.
“We got the momentum going but
not all the way so we could take the
game over.”
But playing Tech close will give
A&M a lift, forward Jenni Edgar
said.
“I think deep down we aren’t
really sure of ourselves until we get
out there,” said Edgar, who kept
A&M in the game with her long-
range jumpers. “By that time, it’s too
late. I guess we really didn’t come in
thinking we could beat them. This
game will help us though. We see
now that if we can play with them,
we can play with anybody.”
Texas Tech Head Coach Marsha
Sharp was impressed with A&M.
“I thought (A&M) shot the ball ex
ceptionally well especially from the
long and mid-range areas,” Sharp
