A great way of life.
Texas A&M’s swimming teams
took the LSU Tigers by the tail in
Baton Rouge Saturday and pro
ceeded to hurt their feelings.
The Aggies’ 13th ranked women’s
team came away with a 74-39 win,
while the Aggie men spotted the Ti
gers 16 points and still came away
with a 63-42 victory.
The women’s team took seven
first place finishes and pushed their
record to 3-1. The men captured six
first place finishes and moved their
record to 4-2.
The Aggie men don’t have any di
vers and that’s a sacrifice of 16
points before a swimmer ever hits
the water.
Aggie Coach Mel Nash said that
recruiting divers was not a good idea
this season because A&M’s outdoor
diving facility just doesn’t do the job
during the winter months.
“This year we finally decided to
quit beating our head aginst the wall
with the outdoor facility,” Nash said.
“We did not recruit any new divers
because to bring them in was being
unfair to them. They really couldn’t
improve during their time in college
because of the outdoor facility.”
The women’s team isn’t as bad off
— they, at least, have two divers.
This was the first competition of
the new year for the swimmers and
Nash is pleased with the way things
are going.
“The last month and a half of
working with the team has been the
most pleasant and productive time
I’ve had in eight years of college
coaching,” Nash said. “It’s the kind
of team I’ve always wanted to be
working with. They are by far the
most serious group I’ve ever had
about their training. They have a
good time, but they get in the water
and they don’t complain. They know
they have to work to achieve the
goals they want to reach.”
The Ags take their show on the
road again this weekend when they
travel to Lubbock for a duel meet
competiton with Texas Tech on Sat
urday.
“When we go up there they have
their band and the cowbells,” Nash
said. “It’s a nightmare every time we
go there. We should be able to beat
them except that they have real good
divers and we don’t have any divers
at all.”

The high-flying Southern Meth
odist Mustangs will likely have to ad
just to a higher altitude this week.
The third-ranked Mustangs, who
outlasted stubborn Texas Christian
74-70 on Saturday, could pass Duke
in The Associated Press poll.
“Whether we deserve to be
ranked that high is up to the writers
and broadcasters, but I believe we’ve
earned it,” said SMU center Jon
Koncak.
SMU is now 15-1 and off to the
best start in the school’s history. The
Mustangs are the only unbeaten
team in Southwest Conference play
with a 5-0 ledger.
In other SWC games, Houston
and Texas Tech, both 4-1, kept pace
for second place.
The Cougars bounced Arkansas
78-73 and Texas Tech routed Bay
lor 92-71.
Before Wednesday’s showdown
against Texas, SMU Coach Dave
Bliss will have to get some matters
settled with star guard Carl Wright.
