Woman senator
gets huge ID card
Associated Press
AUSTIN — Texas’ only woman
state senator received as a joke
Wednesday a huge ID card in recog
nition of her vain attempt to get on
the House floor for a speech by Gov.
Mark White to the Legislature.
Cyndi Taylor Krier, a 34-year-old
lawyer, was barred from the House
chamber on Tuesday by doorkeep
ers who did not recognize her.
Krier, a San Antonio Republican,
chose to go upstairs to the visitors’
gallery rather than insisting on a
downstairs seat with other senators.
“Lots of those in the Senate are
new faces to us over here,” said
House Sergeant-at-Arms Ron
Hinkle, who wrote Krier an immedi
ate letter of apology.
Krier said, “I guess I could have
bullied my way in, saying, ‘I’m a state
senator.’ But I didn’t.”
She was not carrying her official
Senate photo identification.
So, on Wednesday, Sen. Chet Ed
wards presented Krier with a brief
case-sized photo ID labeled “Official
Legislative Identification —Depart
ment of Public Safety.”
“Carry it with you everywhere you
go,” said Edwards, D-Duncanville.
“It might even get you a parking
place at the Capitol.”
The youthful looking Edwards —
the youngest senator at 33 — told
Krier in his legislative career he had
been mistaken for a page and high
school student, “and I can empathize
with you.”
Sen. Carl Parker, D-Port Arthur,
jokingly said he had received a tele
gram from former presidential can
didate Jesse Jackson telling Krier to
heed Jackson’s advice: “I am —
somebody.”
Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby recalled that
several years ago after a woman
House member had been denied ac
cess to a private club in the down
town Driskill Hotel, she asked her
colleagues to boycott the hotel.
“I will recognize you if you’d like
to introduce a resolution to boycott
the House,” said Hobby, smiling.
Krier responded, “I want to thank
all of you for your gallant efforts. I
do hope to accomplish a few other
things besides getting on the House
floor.”

Wife in murder-for-hire case
gets spouse's estate money
Associated Press
BAY CITY — A woman convicted
of the murder-for-hire killing of her
husband has been awarded $20,000
from his estate in an out-of-court
settlement with the dead man’s
mother.
Roberta Turner agreed to make
the settlement with Fran Turner,
who was sentenced to life in prison
for the murder of her husband Rob
ert Turner, rather than have her
son’s $500,000 estate tied up in liti
gation while Fran Turner appeals
her murder conviction.
Fran Turner separated from her
husband shortly after she was
named beneficiary on his $300,000
in life insurance.
In her trial last February, testi
mony showed she hired a Bay City
cable television installer, Michael
Hunter, to help her kill Turner.
Hunter testified that Fran Turner
promised him part of her husband’s
estate if he would assist in his mur
der.
Turner was killed in March 1982
at a roadside park near Richmond.
An autopsy showed he had been
stabbed more than 60 times.
Hunter was charged with capital
murder in the killing, but has been
promised a reduced charge of mur
der and a 30-year prison sentence as
part of a plea bargain arrangement.
Fran Turner was convicted of
capital murder, but the jury did not
sentence her to death.
The conviction carries a life sen
tence, but she is appealing.
Sherri Frank, daughter of Fran
Turner from an earlier marriage, is
also charged with murder and is on
trial in Richmond.
Prosecutors said she helped plan
the murder and transported the
body from the murder scene.
