Defending national champion
Georgetown is finding that as the
college basketball season grows
older, the victories come harder.
Saturday the No. 1 Hoyas were
taken to overtime for the second
time in eight days but remained un
defeated by defeating Big East rival
No. 20 Villanova, 52-50 in the Spec
trum at Philadelphia.
“I’m very proud of the fact that
when we were behind, our guys
gutted it out,” Georgetown Coach
John Thompson said after his team
improved to 15-0, 4-0 in the confer
ence that ranks five of its teams in
the Top 20.
“I saw a lot pfOpportunities where
our kids could have given up be
cause it was not our clay, but they
didn’t.”

teams, No. 2 Duke eased past No. 19
Washington, 71-59; No. 5 Memphis
St. downed Southern Mississippi, 82-
60; No. 6 North Carolina beat Vir
ginia 65-61; No. 7 Oklahoma de
feated Northwestern Louisiana, 98-
62; No. 8 Syracuse downed Provi
dence, 71-63; No. 11 Indiana beat
Wisconsin, 90-68; No. 12 Oregon St.
nipped Kansas St., 56-55; No. 13
Louisiana Tech stopped Texas-Ar-
lington, 76-65; No. 16 Illinois
upended No. 14 Michigan St., 75-
63; No. 15 DePaul defeated Hous
ton, 69-58; No. 17 Boston College
beat Seton Hall, 69-66 and No. 18
Louisiana St. defeated Tennessee,
75-65.
At Durham, N.C., Johnny Daw
kins scored 19 points and Mark Ala-
rie 17 to lead unbeaten No. 2 Duke
past No. 19 Washington.
The Huskies trailed by seven at
halftime but grabbed a 44-43 lead.
The Blue Devils reeled off nine
straight points and dominated the
rest of the contest.

ford scored 20 points to lead the
Hoosiers past Wisconsin. Wiscon
sin's Ric k Olson's scored 20 points
and set a Big fen record by hitting
his 36th consecutive free throw.
