Friday, December 7, 1984/The Battalion/Page 7 MADD holds memorial for crash victims By KARLA K. MARTIN Staff Writer He compared it to Silver Taps or the Aggie Muster. But in this memo rial, said Kirk Brown, president of the Brazos County MADD Chapter, not all the victims are dead. MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, has sponsored this memo rial service nationwide for two years. The memorial service, called the Third Annual Candlelight Vigil, will be held Monday on the steps of the College Station City Hall at 7:30 p.m. Brown said that during this vigil, candles will be lighted in memory of the victims of drunk drivers while their names are called aloud. “Our main purpose in this vigil,” Brown said, “is to show that these people should not have died in vain, and MADD is working to see that more people aren’t victims.” Brown, who is also a professor of soil sciences at Texas A&M, said that when one individual is killed in an alcohol-related crash, about 10 peo ple suffer. “One out of 10 Texans have had family members killed in alcohol-re lated accidents,” Brown said. “And there were 20 people killed in our community last year — victims of car crashes. “It’s difficult for us to determine how many of these car-crash deaths were alcohol related, but statistics show that alcohol is involved in 90 percent of all auto crashes. It’s the American way of death.” Brown said that anyone who wishes to have a candle lighted for someone should contact the MADD Chapter at 693-6014. Brown said that today, there is a 50 percent chance that all Americans will be involved in alcohol related ac cidents. :: p.m ETA | lA#hnt , c im • WW I I 9 Friday • ALLEMANDERS: wiB hold a graduation dance for dance clasts at the Pavilion from 7:50 p.m. to 9 NUi will meet at 7 p.m. in 00!
