my heart, my first love still
waited. And finally my chance
came one day when my boyf
riend called an old high school
friend who now ran a stable.
My roommate and I drove out
to Harmony Farms for our first
lesson. The first few lessons
went fine (except for an im
promptu gallop on Laddie). Af
ter a while though. Harmony
Farms began to fall apart. Sha
ron and I could never find the
right tack to put on the horses.
The reins on the bridles were
knotted every time they broke,
and sometimes, we even rode in
a children's saddle (not too com
fortable for anyone weighing
over 55 pounds).
Harmony Farms closed down.
But when it closed, I was happy
because I had made a deal — I
was going to lease Laddie.
Laddie was a fiery steed of un
certain age (somewhere between
28 and 30). He still jumped 3-
foot fences, though, and would
run away with you. His hair —
more like fur — was four inches
long because he had pituitary tu
mors, but I loved his furry,
teddy bear body.
Finally, Laddie had to go back
to his owner, and I bought my
self a 6-year-old Thoroughbred
named Sweet & Shy. Don't let
the name fool you, Sweet &
High is a better description.
Now, the fever has pro
gressed into insanity. Horse
crazy, they call me.
Recently some friends asked
me who I loved more — my
horse or my boyfriend.
"Well," I said, "considering I
spend more time with my horse
(three hours a day), I'd call it an
even draw when my boyfriend
is on the horse."
At least my boyfriend under
stands my love of horses. He
rode for five years when he was
younger and next semester,
we're going to find a horse for
him to lease.
Other friends don't under
stand as well. I called my best
friend from high school and told
her I'd bought a horse. "I
thought you'd outgrown that,"
she said. No, horses are here to
stay.
