Biologist studies beans, sorghum By PATRICE KORANEK Staff Writer Today certain crops such as beans and sorghum are undesirable sources of foods because of their low nutritional value. But genetic engi neering being done by Timotny Hall, head of the Texas A&M bi ology department, soon may allow more types of plants to be used for food. Hall has been working on regulat ing the expression of genes in plants such as the French bean, which has a high level of the protein phaseolin. Phaseolin is low in one amino acid, methionine. As a result, the bean’s nutritional value is decreased. “We are working to increase the amount of protein found in the seeds to enhance their nutritional value,” Hall said. He already has transferred the gene to a sunflower plant and come up with a mass of tissue that makes a bean protein high in methionine. The new creation is called a “sun- bean.” “I hope to use this as a framework for more research in crops like sorg hum,” Hall said. Increasing the amount of protein in seeds is only one phase of Hall’s research. Another aspect involves al tering the genes in sorghum plants Electrical so that sorghum may be usedl making leavened products bread. “Sorghum is missing certainff teins called gluten which areiiti!| the leavening process,” Hall said | Gluten gives bread its tough,dt; ticity quality. Through genetic engineering may be possible to alter the ptoB structure of sorghum and useii| we use wheat to make breads and! reals, Hall said. A third aspect of Hall's resfli involves learning how viruses mu® ply in plants, and finding out W the viruses can be controlled. I Much of the work Hall hast® nleted was done at a biotechnoli laboratory in Wisconsin beforcl came to A&M in September. Hall says he has been unabletoj much research recently because? facilities he needs aren’t ready vet] Hall says he will continue djl ing into tne department's progt^ before he makes any changesasl partment head. “My goal is to solidify thedef| ment’s reputation as a first-raitf search and teaching departuKj Hall said. “Any university that teaching its students the latestkJ otechnology isn’t preparing ilf for the future.” engmee program at UT cut United Press International AUSTIN — The University of Texas announced Wednesday it will limit undergraduate enrollment in electrical and computer engineering because of a lack of faculty, facilities and money. UT President Peter Flawn said that to maintain the undergraduate enrollment in electrical engineering at 1,500 students, admissions will limited to 700 new students each cal endar year. Admission will be based on overall academic achievement and poten tial, he said. Additionally, the admission of all transfer, inter-college and intra-col lege applicants to the electrical engi neering curriculum will be sus pended through the fall 1985 semester. “It is inappropriate for ttiej versity to admit freshmen and ini fer students who perform '' f “| their major and then deny the®| privilege of completing theirdw requirements within a reasonalra riod of time,” Flawn said. S ualified freshmen and tRu icants who are deniedadu^l to electrical engineering will fered admission to other under? l | uate engineering degree pM said. The enrollment limitation if for the Depart merit of Electric jj Computer Engineering followsfl edents already set in the Sck' | Architecture, the Law School | School of Nursing, the Colle|| Pharmacy and the College of q ness Administration.
