Bright idea ready
for students today
By ADA FAY WOOD
Reporter
The Texas Aggie Manufacturing
Co. begins marketing the first Aggie
light switch cover today.
The idea came from students in
Industrial Education 137, Overview
of Production Processes and Market
ing. The covers will be available
through Dec. 7.
TAMCO was established this se
mester by I.Ed. 137 students. Com-
Dany marketing co-manager Mary
kowcraft said the company’s project
was created within the classroom.
“It started with everyone making
a prototype of a personal idea, and
then the class voted on which ones
they thought would be marketable,”
Scowcraft said.
Of the 20 prototypes, seven were
picked to withstand a marketing sur
vey held in the Commons, she said.
All the prototypes were set out on
tables for examination. Scowcraft
said students were asked why they
selected one product over another,
how much they would pay for the
moduct and how the product could
je improved.
The survey results helped I.Ed.
137 students narrow down the possi
ble products to two or three, and
breaK-even charts were done on
these, Scowcraft said. The charts
showed the marketability of each se
lected prototype and determined
whether the costs and profits would-
balance each other.
The Aggie light switch cover was
the winner of the search for the best
product, and the manufacturing be
gan, Scowcraft said.
Fifteen students using electric
saws cut the solid wood covers into
shape, Scowcraft said. The students
are divided into groups and each
group manufactures the individual
pieces of the switch covers, which are
then assembled and painted, she
said.
“We produce about 25 light
switches a day,” Scowcraft said.
The switch cover fits on top of a
regular wall plate. It is painted
white, and has an Aggie sticker cen
tered on it. A maroon “thumbs up”
hand, which is attached to the back
of the wooden cover and sticks out to
the side, is used to turn the light on
and off.
Lab fees and company stock pro
vide the financial backing for the
business venture so far. Class mem
bers bought stock before the project
started, Scowcraft said. The stock is
now available to the public.

craft said. “It gives us a view of the
real world and how a company must
work together to make it.”
The Aggie light switch covers will
be sold for $5. Orders can be placed
through TAMCO members.
