■Texas A&M didn’t know what to
expect from Stephen F. Austin in its
home basketball season opener Sat
urday night. In fact, the Aggies
MMPM didn't know what to expect from
themselves.
WBBBBHThe Aggies returned six letter-
^ men from last year’s squad, includ-
* ing returning starters guard Todd
Ml Holloway, center Jimmie Gilbert and
y&Hylrwards Winston Grite and Kenny
/ ijr Brown. The Aggies were expected
■ to have enough experienced players
and talented newcomers to enable
Bthein to peak earlier in the season.
■The Aggies didn’t exactly peak
but their 79-64 victory over SFA was
an impressive step in the right direc
tion.
“We just didn’t know what to ex
pect from Stephen F. Austin,” said-
jHolloway, who chipped in 11 points.
|‘They were a very patient team and
that impressed me a lot. In the first
hall 1 guess you could say we played
a little lackadaisically. They were
koming up with a lot of big shots.”
■The Aggies put together a bal-
inud scoring effort. Gilbert led the
Hgies with 16 points — the first
time he has accomplished that in his
three years at A&M. Crite had 10
points and blocked five shots.
Bfirown added 10 points, mostly
from “downtown,” and Don Mar-
Sjibury scored 12. Holloway said Mar-
ZANSAHO ffiry’s play will make up for the loss
of Darnell Williams, who was de-
llared academically ineligible for

tie Ags | Holloway, who has emerged as
■e floor leader in only his sopho-
more year, said this season’s home
opener was better than last year’s —
offensively.
■“Our offense is more together this
tyeai compared to last year,” Hollo-
id Texas)ait wa y sa ‘d- “Some shots didn’t go to
night, but they’ll be a lot of nights
xles around 4 e that. We were kind of dragging
gn behindiil UIse ' ves aroun d the court tonight.”

ial Stadium.pached team,” Metcalf said. “I was
^^Jpleased with the way we played for
j the most part. Defensively, we’re not
■ far along as we’d like to be, but I
Rdn’tsee anything out there tonight
that can’t be corrected.”
